Trump's son accuses Mamdani of anti-Indian bias, suggests mayoral priorities amid NYC transition.

Donald Trump Jr. has ignited controversy by claiming that New York City's Mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, "hates the Indian population". During a recent interview on Fox News, Trump Jr. criticized Mamdani, also labeling him a "socialist communist". He argued that Mamdani should prioritize essential city services like "safe streets, clean streets, [and] reasonable taxes," suggesting New York could thrive "without government intervention".

These remarks have intensified the debate surrounding Mamdani's political direction and identity. As the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of New York City, Mamdani's victory is considered a milestone for immigrant representation and progressive politics. Born in Kampala, Uganda, to academic Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair, Mamdani's background has been a focal point amid political discussions. His election platform, which includes support for free city buses, a rent freeze in rent-stabilized housing, universal child care, and a $30 minimum wage by 2030, has also drawn attention.

Trump Jr.'s accusations are part of a broader effort to portray Mamdani as a radical socialist whose policies could destabilize the city. He also stated that Mamdani "wants to arrest Netanyahu, hates the Jewish people". Political analysts note that these comments aim to evoke fear among those who view Mamdani as disrupting established norms.

Mamdani has not directly responded to the "hate" accusation. However, he has consistently rejected personal attacks from political opponents.

Notably, this isn't the first time the Trump family's views on India have stirred controversy. In 2018, Donald Trump Jr. was criticized for praising the "smiles" of India's poorest citizens, with many calling his remarks "tone-deaf".

Despite the criticism, Mamdani's transition team is taking shape, with Maria Torres-Springer, the co-chair of Mamdani's transition team, reporting they have received close to 50,000 resumes for jobs in the new administration. Mamdani has also announced his first appointments: Dean Fuleihan as First Deputy Mayor and Elle Bisgaard-Church as his chief of staff.

Even President Trump has weighed in, stating that Mamdani must "respect" Washington and suggested a willingness to assist New York. Trump also hinted at a possible meeting with Mamdani.

Mamdani's election and the subsequent reactions highlight the deep political divisions within the United States. His administration is set to begin on January 1, 2026. As Mamdani prepares to take office, he faces the challenge of addressing these divisions while implementing his progressive agenda for New York City.
