The political landscape in Karnataka is once again witnessing a churn, with renewed speculation surrounding a potential change in Chief Minister. Loyalists of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar have reportedly descended upon Delhi to lobby the Congress high command to elevate Shivakumar to the Chief Minister's post, replacing Siddaramaiah. This development coincides with Siddaramaiah completing what was initially speculated to be half his term, reigniting discussions of a possible "rotational chief minister" arrangement.
Adding fuel to the fire, Shivakumar recently hinted at stepping down as the Karnataka Congress president, suggesting that others should be given an opportunity. He stated that he cannot hold the post permanently, as he will have served for six years in March 2026. However, he assured party workers of his continued presence in the senior leadership. Shivakumar's brother, D.K. Suresh, also weighed in, stating that Shivakumar would be rewarded for his hard work and would become CM if destined.
Despite these developments, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has dismissed any possibility of a leadership change. He hinted at continuing in his position by stating his intention to present the 17th state budget next year. When questioned about remaining in the top spot for the full five-year term, Siddaramaiah labeled the debate as unnecessary.
The Congress party has not officially confirmed any agreement regarding a rotational chief minister. When the Congress secured victory in the 2023 Assembly elections, both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were contenders for the Chief Minister's position. Ultimately, Siddaramaiah was appointed as Chief Minister, while Shivakumar assumed the role of Deputy Chief Minister.
Amidst the speculation, Minister N. Chaluvarayaswamy and MLAs Iqbal Hussain, H.C. Balakrishna, and S.R. Srinivas have reportedly traveled to Delhi to meet with top Congress leaders. Twelve more legislators are expected to join them.
Mallikarjun Kharge, the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) president, has suggested further discussions with Rahul Gandhi and AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal before making a final decision on any cabinet reshuffle or change in the Chief Minister's post. Sources indicate that Kharge has effectively passed the decision-making responsibility to Rahul Gandhi.
D.K. Suresh, the former Bangalore Rural MP, acknowledged that Siddaramaiah has kept his promises by implementing the "guarantee" schemes. He also stated that as a Congress worker, he is aware of everything within the party.
The coming weeks are likely to be crucial in determining the future leadership of Karnataka. While Shivakumar's loyalists push for a change, Siddaramaiah appears determined to continue his tenure. The Congress high command's decision will be pivotal in resolving the ongoing tussle and setting the direction for the state government.
