New Delhi: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra addressed students at the Delhi School of Economics on Thursday, offering insights on career paths and the importance of passion and hard work. During an interactive session held on the sidelines of the VKRV Rao Memorial Lecture, Governor Malhotra responded to a student's inquiry about how to become the Governor of the central bank.
Instead of providing a direct roadmap, Malhotra shared a life lesson, drawing upon his own experiences and the wisdom of Steve Jobs. He advised students to focus on their work with passion and dedication, emphasizing that future career paths often become clear only in retrospect. "Do your Karma, do it with passion, and the dots will connect," he stated. He also quoted Steve Jobs, saying, "the dots will connect only when you look backwards… going forward, you'll not be able to".
Malhotra stressed the importance of focusing on the task at hand rather than fixating on the results. He encouraged students to immerse themselves in their work with unwavering dedication, confident that their efforts would eventually lead them to their desired goals. This philosophy, he noted, was one he had previously shared at his alma mater, IIT Kanpur.
The Governor's address resonated deeply with the students, sparking a wide-ranging discussion that touched upon various aspects of the Indian economy. He fielded questions on topics such as the rupee, inflation targeting, liquidity operations, and the RBI's regulatory philosophy.
Malhotra's emphasis on hard work and passion aligns with his career trajectory. Prior to assuming the role of RBI Governor, he held various key positions in the government, demonstrating his expertise in economic and financial matters. His experience includes serving as Secretary of the Department of Revenue and the Department of Economic Affairs, as well as a member of the Fifteenth Finance Commission and India's Sherpa to the G20.
The Governor's advice serves as a reminder to students that career success is not solely determined by strategic planning but also by cultivating a genuine passion for one's work. By embracing challenges, working diligently, and maintaining unwavering dedication, individuals can unlock their full potential and achieve their aspirations.
