However, the macronutrient composition varies. Chia seeds contain roughly 6% water, 42% carbohydrates (with 82% of that being fiber), 31% fat, and 17% protein. Sesame seeds, on the other hand, offer approximately 6.6 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of protein, and 14.1 grams of fat per ounce. Chia seeds also contribute calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, making both seeds valuable for maintaining strong, healthy bones. Chia seeds also contain more Vitamin C, A, and E than sesame seeds. Chia seeds are exceptionally high in fiber, containing close to 10 grams per ounce, which is about 35% fiber by weight. Sesame seeds also provide a good source of fiber, but significantly less than chia seeds, with 3.5 grams per 30 grams serving of unhulled seeds.

Chia seeds are renowned for their high omega-3 fatty acid content, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). About 60% of the fats in chia seeds consist of ALA, making them one of the best plant-based sources of this essential fatty acid. ALA has been shown to reduce cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure, potentially lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Sesame seeds also contain healthy fats, including omega-6 fatty acids, but require a careful dietary balance for optimal cardiovascular benefits.

Antioxidant Properties

Sesame seeds excel with potent antioxidants like sesamin and sesamolin, which protect cells and boost liver health. These lignans also contribute to reducing blood lipids and improving liver function. While chia seeds also offer antioxidants, they are present in lower concentrations compared to the powerful lignan content of sesame seeds.

Both chia and sesame seeds offer a range of additional health benefits. Chia seeds may improve blood sugar regulation, reduce blood pressure, and improve certain liver conditions.
