Following India's strikes on alleged terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Pakistani celebrities Hania Aamir and Mahira Khan have voiced their condemnation of the actions. The strikes, which India has dubbed "Operation Sindoor," were reportedly conducted in response to a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people.
The Indian Armed Forces stated that the strikes targeted terrorist infrastructure and were carefully calibrated to avoid escalating tensions or harming Pakistani military installations. However, Pakistan has reacted strongly, vowing to retaliate at a "time and place of its own choosing". Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry condemned the strikes as a "cowardly attack". Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also decried the strikes as an "act of war," asserting Pakistan's right to respond.
Amidst rising tensions, Hania Aamir and other Pakistani artists have found their Instagram accounts blocked in India. This digital crackdown is seen as part of India's response to alleged Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Aamir, who has a significant following in India, has been the subject of much discussion, particularly after a fake post falsely attributed blame to the Pakistani army for the Pahalgam attack. She clarified that the post was fabricated and did not reflect her views, emphasizing that assigning blame without proof only deepens divides.
Despite the ban, many Indian fans have reportedly used VPNs to access Aamir's Instagram account, expressing their support. Aamir responded to this gesture with emotion, stating "Ro doongi (I will cry)". Other Pakistani celebrities, including Mahira Khan, have also faced similar restrictions on their social media presence in India. The blocking of these accounts has sparked debate about the role of artists in political narratives and the impact of such bans on cultural exchange. Some view it as a necessary measure to protect India from terror, while others argue that it unfairly targets individuals and hinders efforts to promote understanding and peace.
