Kashmir villagers recount BBC surviving shelling ordeal in Indian-administered region: A harrowing tale of resilience.

Recent reports detail the experiences of villagers in Indian-administered Kashmir who have survived intense shelling amidst escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The surge in hostilities follows missile strikes by India into Pakistani-administered Kashmir and Pakistani territory, which Islamabad has condemned as an "act of war". Pakistan has responded with retaliatory measures, including alleged artillery shelling and the purported downing of Indian fighter jets.

The Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border dividing the disputed Kashmir region, has become a hotbed of conflict, with civilians caught in the crossfire. Villagers residing near the LoC have reported heavy artillery and mortar shelling impacting their homes and communities. Many have been forced to flee their villages, seeking refuge in safer areas, while others are taking shelter in the streets and open spaces, fearing further attacks.

The recent escalation was triggered by a deadly attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, where 26 people, mostly Indian Hindu tourists, were killed. India has blamed Pakistan for backing the attack, a charge Islamabad vehemently denies. In response, India launched what it called "precision strikes" against alleged terrorist infrastructure within Pakistani territory. Pakistan, however, maintains that the strikes hit civilian areas, including mosques, resulting in numerous casualties.

Reports indicate a significant loss of life and widespread injuries among civilians on both sides of the LoC. Indian police and medics reported that several civilians have been killed and many more wounded by Pakistani shelling in the Poonch district. Similarly, Pakistani officials have stated that dozens have been killed and injured in missile strikes and artillery fire by Indian forces. The exchange of fire has also caused damage to homes and infrastructure, exacerbating the suffering of the affected communities.

The international community has expressed concern over the escalating tensions and called for de-escalation. The UK has offered its support to both India and Pakistan in an effort to promote dialogue and regional stability. U.S. President Donald Trump has also offered to mediate and help bring an end to the crisis. However, with both sides坚定的立场, the situation remains fraught with risk.

The villagers in Indian-administered Kashmir, who have already endured decades of conflict, are now facing renewed uncertainty and fear. Their stories underscore the human cost of the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan and highlight the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir dispute.
