In a significant escalation of tensions, Pakistan launched a military offensive against India, which was effectively countered by the Indian Air Force using the Russian-made S-400 missile defense system. This action follows India's precision strikes on terror camps within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The S-400 system, also known as "Sudarshan Chakra" in India, played a crucial role in neutralizing the incoming aerial threats.
The Attacks and India's Response
On the night of May 7–8, Pakistan launched a barrage of missiles and drones targeting military and civilian sites across Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan. According to Air Marshal Kapoor, Pakistan intended to strike 15 Indian cities. Key locations such as Jammu civil airport, Samba, RS Pura and Arnia were targeted. India's air defense forces, employing the S-400 missile system, intercepted and destroyed the incoming projectiles, preventing damage to infrastructure and casualties. Security agencies have confirmed that all missiles were intercepted mid-air. Debris from intercepted drones and missiles was recovered at multiple locations. In response, the Indian armed forces targeted air defense systems in several locations within Pakistan, including an air defense site in Lahore.
The S-400 "Sudarshan Chakra" Defence System
The S-400 missile defense system is considered one of the world's most advanced long-range air defense systems. India refers to the S-400 Triumf system as “Sudarshan Chakra,” drawing from the mythological weapon of Lord Vishnu, symbolizing swift and decisive destruction. It is capable of engaging almost all types of modern warplanes, cruise missiles, and even fast-moving intermediate-range ballistic missiles. Its radar can track targets up to 600 km away. The system comprises missile launchers, a powerful radar, and a command center. The S-400 can simultaneously track and engage over 100 aerial targets. It has a range of 400 kilometers and can be deployed quickly across the country.
In October 2018, India signed a $5 billion deal with Russia to acquire five units of the S-400 air defense missile systems. The first system was deployed in Punjab in 2021 to defend against aerial threats from both Pakistan and China.
Tensions and Reactions
The recent events have led to heightened tensions between the two countries. Following India's strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and PoK, Pakistan retaliated with drone and missile attacks. India has stated that it remains fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and ensure the safety of its people. In light of the attacks, several airports in northern India were put on high alert, and blackouts were enforced in many cities.
The United States has also taken note of the situation, with U.S. Secretary Rubio reaching out to India and Pakistan and urging restraint.
