Anushka Sharma, the Bollywood actress, has often spoken about her deep respect for the Indian Army, a sentiment rooted in her upbringing as the daughter of Colonel Ajay Kumar Sharma. Her father, a decorated officer, served in key operations, including Operation Bluestar and the Kargil War. Growing up in a military household instilled in her a profound understanding of the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families.
During the Kargil War in 1999, Anushka was just 11 years old. In an interview, she shared her memories of that time, recalling that she didn't fully grasp the gravity of the situation. While her father was on the front lines, she would talk to him about everyday things like "school" and "boyfriends". However, she also remembers being scared because her mother would constantly watch news channels for updates on the war. The actress recalls her mother getting upset when casualties were announced.
"Kargil was a tough one," Anushka said in a 2012 interview with ETimes. "I was too young at that time, but I was scared of seeing my mother. She would always have the news channel switched on throughout the day and would get upset when casualties were announced". She added, "When my dad called, he could not say much, but I would go on talking about my school, boyfriends, and everything else without realising that he was fighting a war".
Despite her young age, the experience left a lasting impression on Anushka. Over the years, she has frequently expressed her pride in being an army officer's daughter, considering it even more important than her achievements in the film industry. "I take pride in saying that I am an army officer's daughter even more than being an actor," she once stated.
Anushka remains very close to her father and feels she can confide in him about things she can't discuss with anyone else. Her upbringing in a disciplined and unpredictable army environment shaped her into a strong, adaptable, and grounded individual.
In light of recent military tensions, Anushka and her husband, Virat Kohli, voiced their support for the armed forces, expressing gratitude for their service and sacrifices. On Instagram, Anushka wrote, "Eternally grateful to our Indian Armed Forces for guarding us during these times like the heroes that they are. Heartfelt gratitude to the sacrifices they and their families have made. Jai Hind".
Anushka Sharma's story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families. Her personal connection to the armed forces adds depth to her expressions of gratitude and highlights the courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment of the Indian military.
