Maharashtra is bracing for a spell of heavy rainfall over the next four days, according to the latest forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Several districts are likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, with some areas expected to receive very heavy rainfall.
The IMD has issued specific alerts for different regions within Maharashtra. For the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, and Raigad, a yellow alert has been issued, indicating light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are also expected in isolated places. Konkan and adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra are forecast to receive fairly widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. Other parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to experience isolated to scattered light or moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph.
Pune is also under an orange alert, with a forecast of light to moderate rainfall and thunder activity for the next few days. The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall over south Madhya Maharashtra between May 19 and 23, with particularly intense precipitation expected on May 21 and 22. Nashik and Jalgaon are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall and gusty winds (40-60 kmph) throughout the forecast period.
The current weather pattern is attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation that is likely to form and move northwards. Strong westerly winds bringing moisture have also contributed to the increased rainfall activity. The IMD has noted that this type of pre-monsoon thundershower is typical just before the onset of the monsoon, which is expected to arrive slightly early this year.
While the heavy rains are expected to bring relief from the heat, authorities are advising residents to take necessary precautions. Citizens are urged to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and warnings, avoid venturing out unnecessarily during heavy rainfall, and take shelter in safe locations during thunderstorms. Farmers are also advised to take measures to protect their crops from the adverse weather conditions. The expected wet spell is likely to persist for at least the next 4 to 5 days, with continued rainfall activity forecast for May 22 and 23.
