Gaurav Gogoi, the newly appointed President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is set to formally take charge as President on June 3, 2025. Preparations are underway to welcome the new president, with a meeting held at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati. Zakir Hussain Sikdar, Working President of APCC, and General Secretary Bipul Gogoi briefed journalists about Gaurav Gogoi's schedule upon his arrival in Assam from New Delhi.
Gaurav Gogoi will arrive directly in Jorhat from New Delhi on May 31. He will interact with the local public and party workers and hold meetings with Congress party workers. On June 1, Mr. Gogoi will go to Nazira and will attend a meeting organized by the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, and exchange views with party workers and the local public. After staying overnight in Sivasagar, he will travel to Nagaon via Jorhat and Golaghat. In Nagaon, he will interact with the party organization, the public, and participate in a public meeting. On June 3, he will attend a meeting with party leaders and workers at the Manvendra Sharma Complex, where he will officially assume charge as the party's new President. In a video message, Gaurav Gogoi sought the support and cooperation of all sections of Assam's citizens to build a new Assam free from corruption and fear.
Gogoi's appointment comes ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The Congress leadership is sending a message to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma by letting Gogoi hold the reins of the party's Assam unit. The Chief Minister has been targeting Gogoi, accusing him of maintaining links with Pakistan's spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence. These attacks intensified after the Pahalgam terror strike and the resultant Operation Sindoor. Sarma said he would provide evidence on September 10 after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case submits its report. Gogoi has refuted these allegations and demanded proof.
Gogoi's appointment is seen as a strategic move by the Congress to revive its position in Assam after a decade of BJP governance. He is viewed as a strong opposition voice and has been engaged in a war of words with Sarma. His victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Jorhat was considered a significant achievement, especially given Sarma's campaign against him.
Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that he possesses documents proving that Gaurav Gogoi and his wife are involved in "anti-India activities." Sarma stated he would reveal these documents on September 10, following the completion of an investigation by a special investigation team (SIT) of the state police. Sarma alleges that Gogoi's wife is involved in collecting intelligence inputs on behalf of a climate lobby and has connections with the Pakistani army and the interior department of Pakistan.
Gogoi has responded to these allegations, stating that Sarma is attempting to divert attention from alleged corruption within the BJP leader's family. Gogoi characterized Sarma's accusations as "ludicrous and ridiculous," bordering on a "C grade Bollywood drama." He believes the allegations have inadvertently raised his profile in Assam and exposed Sarma's insecurities.
Gaurav Gogoi is the son of the late Tarun Gogoi, who served as the Chief Minister of Assam for three terms. Gaurav is a three-time MP, previously representing Kaliabor and now Jorhat. He is stepping into the role of Assam Congress president nearly three decades after his father held the same position. He succeeds Bhupen Kumar Borah, who served as the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president for almost four years. Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey, and Pradip Sarkar have been named as the Assam unit's three new working presidents.
