Kamal Haasan is standing firm on his statement regarding the origins of the Kannada language, despite facing backlash and calls for an apology. The actor and politician has clarified that his comment, "Kannada was born out of Tamil," was made "out of love" and that he will not apologize for expressing affection and what he believes to be historical linguistic connections.
The controversy arose after Haasan made the statement at the audio launch of his upcoming film, "Thug Life," in Chennai. His remarks sparked immediate and strong reactions in Karnataka, with pro-Kannada groups staging protests in cities like Bengaluru and Belagavi, demanding an unconditional apology. Some groups even threatened to boycott "Thug Life," which is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025, if Haasan did not retract his statement.
Responding to the uproar, Haasan addressed the media in Thiruvananthapuram, where he is currently promoting "Thug Life". He stated that people were "confusing the issue" and that his words were "said out of love." He further elaborated that his understanding of language history, taught to him by historians, led him to make the statement.
Haasan defended his position by highlighting Tamil Nadu's inclusive history, pointing out that the state has had chief ministers from various backgrounds, including a Kannadiga Iyengar from Mandya. He also recalled the support he received from Karnataka during a difficult period in Chennai, emphasizing the close ties between the two states.
The actor also took a swipe at politicians, suggesting they were not qualified to discuss the complexities of language history, including himself. He proposed that such discussions be left to historians, language experts, and archaeologists.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also weighed in on the controversy, stating that "Kannada language has a very long history" and that Kamal Haasan "doesn't know."
Haasan concluded his explanation by stating, "Love will never apologize." He believes his statement was an expression of familial affection, particularly towards Kannada star Shivarajkumar, who was present at the event where the initial comment was made. Haasan considers Shivarajkumar's father, the late Dr. Rajkumar, as a father figure, reinforcing the idea that the languages and cultures are interconnected like a family. He added that if one views the issue from a Northern perspective, their understanding might differ, but from a Southern perspective, his statement holds true. He leaves it to the individuals to decide where their allegiances lie, with their family or with languages from the North, emphasizing that it is a democratic decision.
