Shravan Gupta, formerly of MGF, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by an Abu Dhabi court on charges of fraud. Gupta is also a co-accused in the VVIP chopper scam, an issue that has been ongoing for several years.
Gupta's legal troubles extend beyond the Abu Dhabi conviction. He is currently facing extradition requests related to the AgustaWestland case. Furthermore, he is attempting to dismiss a case filed against him in Delhi by Emaar India, arguing that the principle of double jeopardy applies, meaning he cannot be tried for the same crime twice.
The AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam involves allegations of bribery and corruption in a deal to purchase helicopters for use by high-ranking Indian officials. Shravan Gupta's alleged involvement stems from investigations into money laundering and the flow of funds related to the deal. Investigative agencies have reportedly recovered incriminating documents from multiple raids on his properties and businesses.
In a related matter dating back several years, Gupta and his wife have been accused of defrauding Dubai-based real estate company Emaar Properties of a significant sum. The accusation states that during a partnership with the Dubai company, Gupta illicitly transferred jointly-owned properties to a company called Discovery Estates Pvt Ltd at a vastly undervalued price.
Adding another layer to the complexity, Gupta was previously investigated for allegedly siphoning funds to offshore accounts through fraudulent means and Hawala channels. It was suspected that funds were moved to companies owned or connected to Gupta through Interstellar Technologies, a company primarily accused of money laundering in the AgustaWestland scam. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had previously seized properties belonging to Gupta under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Previously, Gupta had left India while under investigation, traveling to England and also sought citizenship in the Commonwealth of Dominica.
The recent conviction in Abu Dhabi marks a significant development in the series of legal battles surrounding Shravan Gupta, potentially opening doors for extradition and further legal proceedings in other jurisdictions.
