Jharkhand Education Minister Ramdas Soren passed away on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the age of 62 while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi. The news was confirmed by Kunal Sarangi, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) state spokesperson and former MLA. Soren had been in critical condition for several days and was declared brain dead prior to his passing.
Soren was admitted to a private hospital in Delhi on August 2 after falling in the bathroom of his residence in Ghorabandha, Jamshedpur. He suffered a serious brain injury and a blood clot as a result of the fall. He was initially treated locally before being airlifted to New Delhi for advanced medical care. Despite the efforts of doctors, his condition worsened, and he remained on life support until his death. Former Union Minister Arjun Munda noted that Soren suffered a brain hemorrhage due to the sudden increase in pressure. According to Irfan Ansari, who holds the Health, Food Supply and Disaster Management portfolios in the Jharkhand government, doctors detected blood clotting in his brain.
Ramdas Soren was the Minister for School Education, Literacy, and Registration in the Government of Jharkhand. He was a member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Ghatshila constituency. Born in Ghorabanda village, East Singhbhum, in 1963, Soren began his political career as the gram pradhan of his panchayat. He was known for his dedication to public service and his connection to grassroots communities. Soren's political journey is closely tied to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), a party known for championing the rights of tribal communities and fighting for Jharkhand's development. He won the Ghatshila (ST) seat in East Singhbhum, which reflected his popularity and the faith people had in his leadership. He had also served as the Minister of Water Resources Department, Minister of Higher Education, and Minister of Technical Education.
Soren's health had been a concern for some time, and he had previously received treatment at Apollo Hospital in Delhi for kidney-related ailments. Following his fall on August 2, the Education and Literacy Department responsibilities were reassigned to Sudivya Kumar Sonu during the Monsoon Session.
Ramdas Soren's body is expected to be brought back to Jamshedpur on Saturday for the final rites. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in Jharkhand's political history. He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to public service and his contributions to the tribal community. He is survived by three sons and a daughter.
