A disturbing incident in Bengaluru involving a BMTC (Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation) bus driver has sparked outrage after a video went viral showing the driver attempting to run over a woman following a roadside argument. The incident occurred on May 23rd around 5:40 PM near Queen's Circle, close to Cubbon Park.
According to reports, the altercation began when the BMTC bus, operating from JJ Nagar to Nagawara, allegedly brushed against the woman's electric car. Deekshitha Reddy Y, a 30-year-old medical student, stated in her complaint that the bus hit her SUV on Kasturba Road, causing damage. Following the collision, the woman, accompanied by her family, got out of her car and stood in front of the bus at a signal, attempting to question the driver about his rash driving.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage indicate that the bus driver, instead of responding or stopping, allegedly moved the bus forward in a threatening manner, appearing to deliberately try to hit her. Fortunately, the woman reacted quickly and managed to move out of the way, narrowly escaping serious injury. The entire incident was captured on the dashcam of a nearby car, and the footage was widely shared on social media, leading to widespread condemnation.
Following the incident, the Cubbon Park police registered a case against the bus driver, identified as Prashanth, under BNS Section 281 (rash driving) and relevant sections of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act. The BMTC has also taken swift action, suspending the driver pending a departmental inquiry. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has stated that strict action will be taken against the driver for his actions.
Conflicting accounts of the events leading up to the incident have emerged. The woman stated that the bus driver's rash and negligent driving caused the initial collision. The bus driver, however, claimed that the woman was arguing with a truck driver and that she then started driving her SUV, attempting to block the bus's path. He maintained that he did not intend to run her over and was only trying to steer the bus to the left. He further alleged that the woman tried to stop the bus and even attempted to assault him.
The BMTC, in its official statement, clarified that the incident stemmed from a minor collision. They stated that the woman exited her SUV and stood in front of the bus at a signal, blocking its path in an attempt to question the driver, after which the driver allegedly tried to move the vehicle forward while she was still standing in front.
The bus has been seized, and an investigation is underway.
