On June 7, 2025, banks in India will largely be closed in observance of Bakra Eid (Eid al-Adha), a significant festival in the Islamic calendar. However, closures will vary by state, in accordance with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines.
Widespread Closure:
Most states and union territories across India will observe a bank holiday on Saturday, June 7, 2025, for Bakri ID (Id-Uz-Zuha). These include Tripura, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Manipur, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, West Bengal, New Delhi, Goa, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, and Himachal Pradesh.
Exceptions:
In a few states, banks will remain open. According to the RBI holiday calendar, banks in Gujarat, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh will function as usual on June 7, 2025. Additionally, although June 7, 2025, is the first Saturday of the month, which is typically a working day, banks in Ahmedabad, Gangtok, Itanagar, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram will remain open.
June 6th Closures:
On Friday, June 6, 2025, banks in Kerala (specifically in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi) will be closed for Eid-ul-Ad'ha (Bakrid). Banks in all other states will be open on this day. The holiday in Kerala was rescheduled based on the local government's announcement and the confirmation of the moon sighting.
RBI Guidelines and Holiday Calendar:
The RBI publishes a holiday calendar under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which specifies bank holidays unique to each state. There are 12 bank holidays in June 2025, including weekends and regional festivals.
Digital Banking Services:
Even with physical branches closed, digital banking services will remain fully operational. Customers can continue using UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, NEFT, and IMPS for transactions, transfers, and other essential banking tasks. However, services that require physical branch access, such as cheque clearing or cash deposits at counters, will not be available until the next working day.
Weekend Closure:
All banks across India will be closed on Sunday, June 8, 2025, as it is a regular weekly holiday.
Importance of Bakra Eid:
Eid al-Adha, also known as Bakrid or Eid ul-Zuha, is the second-holiest festival in Islam. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. The festival is celebrated with prayers, devotion, and the sacrifice of a goat, which is why it is also known as the "goat festival".
Impact on the Stock Market and Government Offices:
The Indian stock market will remain open on both June 6 and June 7, 2025, as per the holiday calendars of the NSE and BSE. Most government offices across the country will observe a holiday on Saturday, June 7, 2025, as it is a gazetted holiday.
