The honeymoon trip to Meghalaya for a newlywed couple from Indore has turned into a chilling saga of disappearance and death, gripping the nation's attention. Raja Raghuvanshi, 29, and his wife, Sonam, 25, embarked on what should have been a joyous journey after their wedding on May 11, but the trip took a dark turn when they went missing on May 23.
The couple's last known movements are pieced together from CCTV footage and witness accounts. On May 22, they were captured on camera arriving at a Shillong homestay on a scooter, carrying a white suitcase. The footage shows them interacting normally, dropping off their luggage before riding away. They then checked into another homestay, and the next day, they checked out of a homestay at Nongriat village in Sohra, proceeding towards Mawlakhiat village without a guide.
Tragedy struck when Raja's body was discovered on June 2 in a deep gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls, approximately 20 kilometers from the Shillong homestay. A police drone located the body, which was later identified by his family. Authorities have confirmed that Raja was murdered, with a traditional machete-style weapon, a 'dao,' believed to be the murder weapon.
Sonam remains missing, intensifying the anguish and uncertainty surrounding the case. A massive search operation is underway, involving the Meghalaya Police, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and a Special Operations Team. Despite these efforts, Sonam's whereabouts remain unknown.
Adding to the mystery, a tourist guide claimed to have seen the couple accompanied by three other men on May 23, the day they disappeared. The guide, Albert Pde, stated that he saw the couple climbing from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat with the men, who were speaking in Hindi. This information has been shared with the police and is under investigation.
New details continue to emerge, deepening the mystery surrounding the couple's fate. The white shirt Sonam was seen wearing in the CCTV footage was later found near Raja's body. Additionally, the scooter they rented was found abandoned near the site where Raja's body was discovered. A black raincoat with suspected bloodstains was also found near the area, though forensic confirmation is pending.
Sonam's brother, Govind, is in Shillong, desperately seeking answers and urging authorities to intensify their search efforts, believing his sister is still alive and has been abducted. He has expressed frustration with the investigation's progress and has requested assistance from the CBI or other agencies.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has assured that his government will leave no stone unturned to bring those responsible for Raja's murder to justice. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident.
The tragic honeymoon trip has become a complex investigation, with authorities working to unravel the circumstances surrounding Raja's death and Sonam's disappearance. The search for Sonam continues, while the police are pursuing all leads to determine the motive behind the crime and bring those responsible to justice.
