India is witnessing a renewed focus on COVID-19 as several states report increases in infections. Gujarat has reported a significant spike of 158 new cases. This increase in Gujarat has contributed to a rise in the country's active infection count, which is now nearing 6,500.
As of June 9, 2025, the total number of active COVID-19 cases in India stands at 6,491, with 358 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. While the overall numbers are relatively low compared to previous surges, the increases in certain states are prompting closer monitoring and preventative measures. No new COVID-19-related deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.
Kerala remains the most affected state, with 1,957 active cases. Gujarat follows, with its recent surge bringing the total number of active cases to 980. Other states with notable active case counts include West Bengal (747) and Delhi (728). Maharashtra has also seen an upward trend, with active cases exceeding 600. In contrast, Karnataka has seen a decline in cases, with a reduction of 78 cases bringing their active tally to 366. Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh are currently reporting zero active COVID-19 cases.
Health officials attribute the recent surge to new variants and sub-variants of Omicron, including JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFC. These variants are reported to be highly transmissible but generally associated with mild symptoms. The WHO classifies these variants as "Variants Under Monitoring," indicating that while they require vigilance, they are not yet considered a major cause for concern.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reports that most current COVID-19 cases are mild and are being managed under home care. The ongoing strategy involves surveillance of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases to detect and respond to potential outbreaks.
Across the country, 624 patients have recovered, discharged, or migrated, since the morning of June 9. Assam has seen a decline in active cases, with the count down to six after two more patients recovered. Since the start of the year, Assam has recorded seven recoveries.
While the situation is under control, health experts are advising caution and adherence to COVID-19 appropriate behavior. This includes maintaining social distancing, wearing masks, and practicing frequent hand hygiene. Although there has been discussion regarding a mass COVID-19 booster vaccination campaign, experts are currently weighing the necessity and optimal timing, with some suggesting that a broad campaign may not be required at this time.
The current COVID-19 situation in India is characterized by localized increases in cases, driven by new Omicron sub-variants. While the overall risk remains low, vigilance and adherence to public health guidelines are essential to prevent further spread and ensure the continued management of the virus as part of the recurring cycle of illnesses.
