The search for Rosmita Hojai, a 26-year-old woman from Assam who went missing after traveling to Delhi for a Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examination, has tragically ended with the discovery of her body in Uttarakhand. Rosmita, a resident of Hojai village in the Dima Hasao district, had last contacted her family on June 5th, 2025, after which she disappeared, prompting a frantic search.
On June 10th, 2025, authorities confirmed that her body was recovered from the banks of a river in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. The discovery has prompted a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death, with two individuals, Hemant Sharma from Delhi and Pankaj Kokar from Haryana, being detained for questioning. These two men had reportedly informed the Shivpuri Police Station about Rosmita's disappearance, claiming she was swept away by the river.
Rosmita's last contact with her mother occurred on the evening of June 5th. During the conversation, she mentioned that she would be returning by train, a statement that her family found unusual and concerning. This raised suspicion that she might have been under duress, leading the family to intensify efforts to locate her.
According to reports, after the RRB exam on June 5th, Rosmita traveled to Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, with Hemant Sharma, a former classmate from Haryana, and Pankaj Kokar. The trio had planned a camping trip in Shivpuri. However, by evening, the two men reported her missing. A local resident claimed to have witnessed a woman drowning near the campsite, fueling fears that Rosmita had been swept away.
The Haridwar police deployed State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) divers to search the river. Following the recovery of her body, it has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Police are also considering the possibility of suicide, while investigating all angles of the case.
Dima Hasao chief executive member (CEM) Debolal Gorlosa confirmed Rosmita's death in a Facebook post, expressing his condolences to her family. He also thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his support in the search efforts. Previously, the Chief Minister had assured Rosmita's family of all possible assistance in locating her. Authorities in both Assam and Uttarakhand are coordinating as the investigation progresses.
Rosmita Hojai had completed her engineering studies in Haryana and was preparing for the APSC (Assam Public Service Commission) examination in Guwahati.
