Fuel prices in India continue to be dynamic, with daily revisions reflecting changes in international crude oil prices, currency exchange rates, and local taxes. As of June 11, 2025, petrol and diesel rates vary across cities, influenced by factors such as Value Added Tax (VAT), freight charges, and other local levies. While metro cities have seen relative stability in recent times, Punjab recently increased VAT, leading to a rise in prices.
In Delhi, petrol is priced at ₹94.72 per liter, while diesel retails at ₹87.67 per liter. Mumbai sees higher prices, with petrol at ₹104.21 per liter and diesel at ₹92.15 per liter. Kolkata has petrol at ₹103.94 per liter and diesel at ₹92.02 per liter. Chennai's rates are ₹100.85 for petrol and ₹92.39 for diesel. These prices are updated daily at 6 a.m., a practice known as the dynamic fuel price method, which has been in effect since June 2017.
The recent increase in Punjab due to VAT adjustments has pushed petrol to ₹98.65 per liter and diesel to ₹88.95 per liter in Chandigarh. Other cities like Bengaluru have petrol at ₹99.84 and diesel at ₹87.89, while Lucknow has petrol at ₹96.57 and diesel at ₹89.76. Gurugram's rates are ₹97.04 for petrol and ₹89.91 for diesel, and Noida sees petrol at ₹96.65 and diesel at ₹89.82.
Several factors influence these prices. India imports approximately 80% of its oil needs, making it highly susceptible to international price fluctuations. Additionally, central excise duty, state VAT, dealer margins, and transportation costs all play a significant role. The value of the rupee against the dollar also affects fuel prices, as a weaker rupee increases the cost of dollar-denominated crude oil.
The highest petrol prices in India are currently in Andhra Pradesh (₹109.63 per liter), Telangana (₹108.05 per liter), and Madhya Pradesh (₹107.39 per liter). Similarly, the highest diesel prices are in Andhra Pradesh (₹97.45 per liter), Telangana (₹96.27 per liter), and Kerala (₹95.44 per liter). Bhubhaneswar has the highest diesel price among capital cities at ₹92.55 per liter, while Itanagar has the lowest at ₹80.16 per liter.
Fluctuations in crude oil prices and exchange rates have a direct impact on domestic fuel prices. Brent crude, a global benchmark, recently experienced volatility, impacting the prices. These fluctuations, combined with tax adjustments and other economic factors, ensure that fuel prices remain a dynamic aspect of the Indian economy.
