A seemingly trivial dispute over parking escalated into a tragic murder in Delhi's Nizamuddin area, claiming the life of Asif Qureshi, cousin of Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi. The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, has sent shockwaves through the community and prompted calls for increased security.
According to police reports, the incident unfolded around 10 p.m. when Asif Qureshi, 42, asked two men to move their scooter, which was blocking the entrance to his home on Church Lane in Bhogal, Jangpura. This simple request led to a heated exchange, during which the two men, identified as Ujjwal, 19, and Gautam, 18, allegedly hurled abuses and threatened Asif before initially leaving the scene.
Tragically, the matter did not end there. The two men returned shortly after, armed with a sharp, "poker-type" weapon. They allegedly attacked Asif, inflicting a grievous stab wound to his chest. Asif was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The Delhi Police have arrested Ujjwal and Gautam, who are brothers and residents of the same lane where Asif lived. A case has been registered under sections 103(1) (murder) and 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The police have also recovered the murder weapon and are conducting further investigations to ascertain the exact sequence of events and the role of each accused in the assault.
Asif Qureshi's family isdevastated by the senseless act of violence. Shaheen, one of Asif's wives, alleged that the attack was premeditated. "This wasn't just a scuffle. My husband was deliberately and conspiratorially murdered," she told reporters. Huma Qureshi's father and Asif's uncle, Saleem Qureshi, recounted the events, stating that Asif was attacked after asking the men to move their scooter from blocking the entrance. "This led to a verbal altercation that turned physical. They were two, together they killed my nephew," Saleem said.
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who are demanding increased security measures and stricter enforcement against street violence. A CCTV footage of the assault has emerged, showing the attackers assaulting Asif while onlookers tried to intervene.
Asif Qureshi, described as a long-time resident of the area and well-regarded among neighbors, ran a chicken business and is survived by his two wives. His sudden and tragic death highlights the alarming issue of escalating disputes and the need for greater tolerance and conflict resolution within communities. This is not an isolated incident as altercations, sometimes fatal, over parking disputes are not new in Delhi. In March, a similar parking dispute between two families in northwest Delhi resulted in one death and several injuries.
