The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh has refuted claims made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding duplicate voter entries in the state. The CEO's office has stated that Gandhi's allegations are "factually incorrect" and appear to be based on outdated data.
Earlier on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Rahul Gandhi held a press conference in Delhi where he alleged that certain voters were registered in multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh. He cited two individuals, Aditya Srivastava and Vishal Singh, as examples of this alleged duplication, claiming their names appeared on electoral rolls in Lucknow and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), as well as in constituencies in Mumbai and Bengaluru. Gandhi claimed that Aditya Srivastava appeared on the voter list four times - twice in Karnataka, once in Maharashtra, and once in Lucknow.
In response, the Uttar Pradesh CEO's office issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), clarifying that Rahul Gandhi seemed to be relying on data sourced from the Election Commission's website dated March 16, 2025. However, a fresh verification conducted on August 7, 2025, via the same portal, revealed that both Aditya Srivastava and Vishal Singh are currently registered only in the Mahadevapura constituency of Bangalore Urban. The CEO stated that their names are not found in the voter rolls of Assembly constituencies 173 (Lucknow East) and 390 (Varanasi Cantt) in Uttar Pradesh. The CEO added, "Therefore, the facts presented concerning Uttar Pradesh have been found to be incorrect".
India Today TV accessed the Election Commission's website and found that Aditya Srivastava's name appears in Karnataka's electoral roll, but not in those of Lucknow or Maharashtra. A search for his EPIC number returned "No result found" in both locations, contradicting Rahul Gandhi's presentation. The current status on the ECI portal indicates he is registered only in Karnataka.
Navdeep Rinwa, the Uttar Pradesh chief electoral officer, also rejected Rahul Gandhi's claims that Aditya Srivastava and Vishal Singh were on voter lists in other states, including assembly constituencies in Varanasi and Lucknow. Rinwa stated that Gandhi's claim was based on data extracted from the ECI website on March 16, 2025. He added that Vishal Singh was found to be enrolled in the Mahadevapura in the same assembly constituency at number 926 in Booth number 513. He confirmed that their names were not found in the voter list in Lucknow or Varanasi and Mumbai as claimed.
Rahul Gandhi had also claimed that the BJP had stolen votes in Karnataka and that the ECI had colluded with the BJP to steal votes in the Maharashtra assembly elections.
