As "Singh Is Kinng" marks its 17th anniversary on August 8, 2025, director Anees Bazmee reflects on the film's enduring legacy and the "memories for a lifetime" it provided. Released in 2008, the action-comedy, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, became a major commercial success, grossing ₹136 crore worldwide and becoming the third-highest-grossing Hindi film of that year.
Bazmee, known for directing mass entertainers like "No Entry," "Welcome," and "Ready", has often spoken fondly of "Singh Is Kinng". The film revolves around Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar), a well-meaning but accident-prone villager sent to Australia to bring back Lakhan Singh (Sonu Sood), a crime boss, and the ensuing chaos and romance. The film also featured Om Puri, Ranvir Shorey, Neha Dhupia, and Javed Jaffrey in supporting roles.
"Singh Is Kinng" was lauded for its blend of comedy, action, and emotion, with Akshay Kumar's portrayal of Happy Singh becoming particularly iconic. The film's music, composed by Pritam, also contributed significantly to its success, with tracks like "Teri Ore" and "Jee Karda" remaining popular even today. Shreya Ghoshal won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for "Teri Ore". Interestingly, the "Teri Ore" song, filmed in Egypt, was shot in just six hours, with the crew capturing key visuals, including the pyramids, despite a tight schedule and multiple costume changes for the lead actors.
The film's title has an extra "n" in "Kinng" based on numerological advice. A significant portion of the movie was filmed in Australia. "Singh Is Kinng" is considered an unofficial remake of Jackie Chan's 1989 film, "Miracles".
Although the film received mixed to positive reviews, with some critics pointing out a cluttered second half, and some finding the plot disjointed, many praised Akshay Kumar's performance and the film's entertaining first half. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film 4 out of 5 stars, stating that "Singh Is Kinng lives up to the hype and hoopla".
On the 17th anniversary of the film, Vipul Amrutlal Shah's Sunshine Pictures, the production house behind the film, celebrated its legacy on social media.
Anees Bazmee has several projects in the pipeline, including a love story, a suspense thriller, and a comedy. He is known for directing "Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2" and "Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3".
