Amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, India continues its efforts to repatriate its citizens through "Operation Sindhu." As of today, June 23, 2025, the operation has successfully brought back nearly 2,000 individuals, including 290 Indians and one Sri Lankan national in the latest flight from Iran. The total number of Indians evacuated from Iran alone has reached 1,713, with additional evacuation flights planned in the coming days.
The most recent flight, carrying 290 Indian nationals and one Sri Lankan national, arrived in New Delhi on June 22, 2025. This special flight originated from Mashhad, Iran. Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita personally received the evacuees at the airport, highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring the safe return of its citizens.
Operation Sindhu was initiated in response to the growing conflict between Iran and Israel, which has left many Indian nationals stranded and anxious. The operation extends beyond Iran, with efforts also underway to assist Indians in Israel. Due to the closure of Israeli airspace, Indian nationals in Israel are being facilitated to cross land borders into neighboring Jordan and Egypt, where they will then be repatriated to India. As of recent reports, 162 Indians have already safely crossed into Jordan from Israel and are expected to return to India soon.
The Indian government has scheduled three more evacuation flights from Iran within the next two to three days to continue bringing home those who wish to return. The Ministry of External Affairs is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining constant communication with Indian nationals in both Iran and Israel. The Indian Embassy in Tehran is providing assistance to those in Iran, helping them move from areas experiencing increased hostilities to safer locations and coordinating their evacuation.
Several individuals and organizations have expressed their gratitude to the Indian government for its swift action and support. Nepal's Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba thanked External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar for assisting in evacuating Nepali nationals from Iran, calling it a reflection of the strong ties between Nepal and India. Similarly, Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry conveyed its appreciation for India's assistance in evacuating Sri Lankan citizens alongside Indian nationals, emphasizing the enduring partnership between the two countries.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran has provided emergency helpline numbers and contact information for Indian nationals requiring assistance. Additionally, the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi has established a 24/7 Control Room to coordinate the evacuation efforts and provide support to those affected.
Operation Sindhu demonstrates India's commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad during times of crisis. The government's proactive approach, close coordination with relevant authorities, and willingness to extend assistance to other nationals underscore its role as a responsible and responsive global player. As tensions in the Middle East remain high, India's evacuation efforts continue to provide a sense of security and relief to its citizens and their families.
