Mauricio Pochettino, the newly appointed manager of the United States Men's National Team (USMNT), has set his sights on achieving World Cup glory on home soil in 2026. The Argentine brings a wealth of experience from managing top European clubs and is determined to instill a winning mentality within the USMNT squad.

Pochettino's arrival in August 2024 marked a significant moment for U.S. Soccer. After a disappointing showing at the Copa América, the federation turned to the respected manager to lead the team into the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Pochettino, known for his high-pressing, attacking style, has previously coached renowned players such as Lionel Messi, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappé.

The 53-year-old's managerial journey began at Espanyol in 2009, where he spent three seasons before moving to the English Premier League with Southampton in 2013. He led the Saints to their highest position in a decade, attracting the attention of Tottenham Hotspur. During his five years with Spurs, Pochettino transformed the club, nurturing young talents and guiding them to their first-ever Champions League final in 2019. He then managed Paris Saint-Germain, winning the Ligue 1 title, before a brief stint with Chelsea.

Despite his impressive club record, Pochettino sees the USMNT job as an "exciting challenge" and an "important opportunity to build together a legacy and make history." However, his tenure has not been without its challenges. Recent losses to Panama, Canada, Turkey and Switzerland have raised questions about the team's preparedness for the upcoming World Cup.

Pochettino acknowledges the need to instill a more competitive culture within the squad. He believes that soccer in the USA is often viewed as a recreational activity, while in other countries, it is a fiercely contested battle. He aims to transform the USMNT into a team of "lions or wolves" who fight as if their lives are on the line.

The USMNT's recent form has been a cause for concern, with critics pointing to a lack of cohesion and leadership. The absence of key players, such as Christian Pulisic, due to fatigue and disagreements over roster selection, has further compounded the team's woes. However, Pochettino remains optimistic, emphasizing the importance of building a strong foundation and fostering a winning mentality.

Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup, Pochettino recognizes the need for a solid defense and a reliable backbone within the team. He has identified several players, including Sergiño Dest, Antonee Robinson, and Chris Richards, as crucial components of his squad. Additionally, he is keeping a close eye on promising talents like Diego Luna and Gio Reyna, who have the potential to make a significant impact.

While some believe it is too early to realistically predict a USMNT World Cup victory in 2026, Pochettino's ambition and track record suggest that he is determined to elevate the team to new heights. He has praised U.S. Soccer's investment in a new $200 million national training center in Atlanta, describing it as "one of the most unbelievable training centers in the world" and a sign that "soccer is going to be a serious sport because it has a home."

Pochettino's contract runs through next summer's tournament, and his immediate focus is on improving the team's performance and instilling a winning culture. While the road to World Cup glory may be challenging, Pochettino's leadership and experience provide hope that the USMNT can make a significant impact on home soil in 2026.
