The sudden passing of Sunjay Kapur, the former husband of actress Karisma Kapoor, has sent shockwaves through the Bollywood community and beyond. Kapur, a prominent businessman and Chairman of Sona Comstar, tragically died on June 12, 2025, at the age of 53, after suffering a heart attack while playing polo in the United Kingdom.
News of his death arrived the same day as the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, a coincidence noted by many expressing their condolences. According to reports, Kapur was participating in a polo match at the Guards Polo Club when he felt unwell. It is believed that he accidentally inhaled a bee, and the resulting sting in his throat triggered a fatal cardiac arrest. Despite immediate medical assistance, he could not be revived.
Among those mourning Kapur's untimely demise is Saba Pataudi, sister of actor Saif Ali Khan and sister-in-law to Kareena Kapoor Khan. Saba, known for her close ties within the Bollywood family, expressed her grief and shock in an emotional message shared on her Instagram Stories. Addressing the confluence of tragedies, she wrote, “Air India... and Sunjay. Shocking to see the news that followed. To a father and wife, son and brother, I can't imagine what it must be like for the families. My sincere condolences and strength and support to them, especially the children. Can't believe it... still.”
Saba's heartfelt words reflect the sentiments of many who knew Kapur, acknowledging the profound loss felt by his family, including his children Samaira and Kiaan with Karisma Kapoor, and his son Azarias with his current wife, Priya Sachdev.
Karisma Kapoor, who was married to Sunjay Kapur from 2003 to 2016, has yet to publicly comment on the tragedy. However, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan were seen visiting Karisma's Mumbai residence to offer their support during this difficult time.
Ironically, hours before his own passing, Sunjay Kapur had posted a condolence message on social media for the victims of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. “Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected. May they find strength in this difficult hour," he wrote.
Sunjay Kapur's funeral is expected to take place in Delhi, according to his father-in-law, Ashok Sachdev. However, sources close to the family indicate that the funeral may be delayed due to legal processes, as Kapur was a US citizen who died in the UK. Repatriation of his body to India requires the completion of several legal formalities, including a post-mortem examination.
The news of Sunjay Kapur's death has prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance from those who knew him. His sudden and unexpected passing serves as a reminder of life's fragility, leaving behind a void in the lives of his family, friends, and colleagues.
