Mumbai is bracing for another day of heavy rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, predicting heavy downpours in the city until 1 PM today, June 17, 2025. This alert follows a period of substantial rainfall that has already affected the city and surrounding regions.
The orange alert, which signifies "be prepared to take action," has also been extended to Thane and Palghar, neighboring districts of Mumbai. A red alert, which signifies "take action", has been issued for Raigad, as well as the ghat areas of Pune and Satara districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated locations. The IMD's forecast indicates that these regions could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall in certain isolated areas until 8:30 AM on Tuesday.
Over the past few days, Konkan and other parts of Maharashtra have been receiving incessant rains, leading to flood-like situations in some districts due to overflowing rivers. Numerous low-lying areas in villages and cities situated along riverbanks have been submerged, exacerbating the challenges faced by local residents.
The heavy rainfall has already taken a toll on Mumbai's infrastructure and daily life. Waterlogging has been reported in several low-lying areas, disrupting road traffic, suburban train services, and metro operations. On Monday, suburban train services on the Central and Western Railway lines experienced delays, with passengers reporting hold-ups of 20 to 30 minutes during the morning rush hour. While services have reportedly returned to normal, commuters are advised to stay updated on potential disruptions.
Airlines have also issued travel advisories in response to the adverse weather conditions. IndiGo and SpiceJet have cautioned passengers about potential flight disruptions and have urged them to allow extra time for travel and check their flight status before heading to the airport. Air India has also indicated that heavy rainfall may impact flight operations to and from Mumbai.
Civic authorities have been working to manage the situation, with disaster response teams on standby. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is closely monitoring the rainfall and water levels in the city's reservoirs. Citizens are advised to avoid venturing out unless necessary and to take precautions to stay safe during the heavy rainfall.
The current weather conditions are part of a larger pattern of heavy rainfall affecting the region. Since June 1, rain-related incidents have claimed 18 lives and injured 65 others in Maharashtra, highlighting the severity of the situation and the need for continued vigilance. The IMD's extended forecast suggests that intermittent rain will persist in Mumbai, although no formal warnings have been issued beyond today's orange alert.
