Shubman Gill is about to embark on a new chapter in his career, leading the Indian Test team for the first time in their series against England. As the young opener steps into the captain's role, he inherits not just the responsibility of leading the team, but also the weight of expectations from a nation eager to see India reclaim its dominance in Test cricket, especially on foreign soil. The series, commencing at Headingley on June 20, marks the beginning of India's campaign in the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

While Gill's leadership during the IPL 2025 season with the Gujarat Titans showcased his composure and tactical acumen, leading a team with varied experience, his Test record is still in its early stages. With a Test average of 35.05 from 32 matches, the five-match series against England will be a stern test of his mettle, both as a player and a leader. The English conditions, known for challenging batters, add to the significance of his captaincy debut.

Amidst the anticipation, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has offered a word of caution and advice to the young captain. Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri emphasized the need for patience and a calm approach. "I think, take your time. It's not going to be easy," Shastri said, acknowledging the tough job ahead for Gill. "He's been asked to do a tough job, that is to captain India on a tour of England. It's never easy, but I think he will learn from this exposure."

Shastri's words carry weight, given his experience of leading India to their last Test series win in England back in 2007. He understands the challenges and pressures that come with captaining the Indian team in English conditions. His advice to Gill is not to rush things and to learn from the experience, viewing it as an opportunity for growth both as a cricketer and a leader.

Shastri also drew parallels between Gill's leadership in the IPL and the challenges he will face in Test cricket. He praised Gill's composure and calm demeanor during the IPL, noting his ability to handle pressure situations. "What I saw of him in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans, he seemed very composed and calm. He's got a good temperament," Shastri added. He believes that with the right support, Gill's growth as a leader is inevitable. "He's matured as an individual, he's got some young players around with him, and I think it's a learning curve as far as Shubman Gill goes."

Gill himself exuded confidence and composure at the pre-match press conference. When asked about his captaincy style and whether it would be inspired by England's "Bazball" approach, Gill responded with a sharp one-liner: "You're going to have to wait till August to see what kind of style it's going to be." This response, delivered with a sheepish smile, drew chuckles from the reporters and highlighted Gill's quiet confidence and determination to carve his own path.

The series also marks a new era for the Indian Test team, with the recent Test retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Gill will be leading a relatively young squad, and the spotlight will be on him to fill the leadership void left by these stalwarts. Moreover, head coach Gautam Gambhir also enters this campaign, seeking to prove himself after a difficult 2024/25 season.

As Shubman Gill prepares to lead India in this challenging series, the expectations are high. While the task is undoubtedly tough, it presents a golden opportunity for him to showcase his leadership skills, learn from the experience, and guide the Indian team to new heights in Test cricket.
