Rajkummar Rao's dedication to his craft is once again in the spotlight, this time for his upcoming gangster action thriller, "Maalik." The film, directed by Pulkit, promises to showcase Rao in a never-before-seen avatar, a ruthless and intense gangster operating in the gritty underworld of Allahabad in 1988. Set to release on July 11, 2025, "Maalik" marks a significant shift for Rao, who is known for his diverse roles in hard-hitting dramas and quirky comedies.
To fully embody his character, Rao underwent a remarkable physical transformation. News reports confirm that he rigorously worked out to build a lithe physique, essential for the high-octane action sequences in the film. Action director Vikram Dahiya, known for his work in "Jigra," was brought on board to design the action set-pieces and assist Rao in his preparation.
However, it wasn't just about building muscle. Rao also committed to growing a thick, rugged beard to enhance his character's transformation from a ruffian to a formidable gangster. Sources suggest that he cultivated his beard for over 80 days, allowing it to grow naturally and achieve the desired look. This dedication to physical detail underscores Rao's commitment to authentically portraying his character.
The film's teaser and motion posters have already generated considerable buzz, with fans praising Rao's intense and menacing look. His tousled hair, bloodied appearance, and the raw energy he exudes in the teaser have left a lasting impression, solidifying the anticipation for "Maalik."
"Maalik" also stars Manushi Chhillar, Medha Shankr, and Prosenjit Chatterjee in pivotal roles. Chatterjee plays Rao's mentor in the film, adding another layer of depth to the narrative. The movie was shot across Lucknow, Varanasi, and Unnao, with a three-month schedule that wrapped up in mid-November 2024. Some key scenes included a grand Diwali celebration and the protagonist's wedding sequence.
This film marks Rajkummar Rao's second collaboration with director Pulkit, following their successful historical drama "Bose: Dead/Alive" in 2017. While their previous project was a period piece, "Maalik" promises a massy offering, highlighting Rao's versatility as an actor. The film's music is composed by Sachin-Jigar, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
With its blend of intense action, underworld drama, and Rajkummar Rao's transformation, "Maalik" is poised to be a thrilling cinematic experience.
