Indian Member of Parliament and celebrated author Shashi Tharoor is embarking on a new project with Russia Today (RT) to host a documentary series titled 'Imperial Receipts'. The series is set to explore the multifaceted and enduring legacies of colonialism, with a particular focus on their impact on modern India.

Tharoor, currently in Russia as the head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, announced the collaboration on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. The 10-part series will air simultaneously on RT and its Indian counterpart, RT India. While the official release date is yet to be announced, Tharoor offered an early preview of the documentary series during his appearance on RT's 'Sanchez Effect' show.

Drawing heavily on Tharoor's extensive knowledge and his acclaimed literary works such as 'Why I Am a Hindu', 'An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India', and 'India: From Midnight to the Millennium and Beyond', the series promises a comprehensive exploration of colonialism's impact. It aims to dissect the historical, economic, social, and cultural consequences that continue to shape India today.

The series comes at a time when India is actively re-evaluating its past and present in the context of its colonial history. Tharoor's perspective, known for its sharp critique of British rule and its long-lasting effects, is expected to provide a thought-provoking and insightful analysis. The choice of RT as the platform has raised some eyebrows, given the network's reputation as a state-backed media outlet, but Tharoor's involvement is likely to draw significant attention to the project both in India and internationally.

Beyond the historical examination, Tharoor also touched upon contemporary geopolitical issues during his recent appearance on RT. He delved into the tensions between India and China, outlining New Delhi's expectations from Beijing and examining China's relationship with Pakistan. Furthermore, his visit to Moscow included a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, highlighting the intersection of this media venture with his ongoing diplomatic engagements.

This collaboration follows Tharoor's recent diplomatic tour to the United States and other countries as part of the "Operation Sindhoor" outreach initiative. During this tour, he conveyed India's stance on global platforms. His role as a prominent voice on international affairs, combined with his deep understanding of Indian history and culture, positions him as a compelling host for this documentary series. The series aims to provide a nuanced understanding of colonialism's repercussions, fostering dialogue and reflection on its continuing relevance in the 21st century.
