The family of the late Glee star Cory Monteith is facing further heartbreak as both his parents have passed away within weeks of each other, years after the actor's tragic death. Ann McGregor, Cory's mother, died peacefully on June 18, 2025, at the age of 74. Her passing came shortly after the death of Cory's estranged father, Joe Monteith, who died on May 12 at the age of 75.
Ann McGregor's obituary noted that she "passed away peacefully" and was being treated for an illness at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon prior to her death. The obituary expressed gratitude to the medical staff for the "impeccable care Ann received". She is survived by her son Shaun Monteith, along with her brothers Pat, Mike, and Pete, sister Mary, and their families. The obituary further described Ann as a "person of strong character" who enjoyed gardening and artistic pursuits on her acreage in Shirley, BC.
Joe Monteith, who was estranged from Cory for much of his life but reconnected with him in 2011, was also being treated for a serious illness before his death. He is survived by his and Ann's son Shaun, along with his second wife, Yvette Monteith. Joe's obituary mentioned that he "created a beautiful life in which he was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandparent, and great grandparent". It further stated that he was a retired veteran from the Canadian Armed Forces, having served for 25 years. After retirement, he enjoyed spending summers at his trailer on the Canaan River with friends. He will be remembered for his "witty sense of humour and love for baseball". His family also thanked "the staff of the palliative care unit at the DECH for their outstanding care and compassion over the last few months".
Cory Monteith's death in July 2013 at the age of 31 shocked the world. He died from a "mixed drug toxicity" involving heroin and alcohol. His body was discovered in his room at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver after he missed his checkout time. A final report released by the British Columbia Coroners Service confirmed that his death was accidental.
Monteith was best known for his role as Finn Hudson on the Fox television series Glee. He had a history of substance abuse and had sought treatment prior to his death. In April 2013, he completed a month-long stint in a treatment facility for substance addiction.
In a 2018 interview, Ann McGregor shared her continued grief over her son's death, stating, "I still can't pick up the pieces...My world totally stopped. And I'm a different person than I was before". She also expressed her belief that Cory "wasn't ready" for Hollywood, calling it "plastic" and "too superficial for him". Joe Monteith, after reconnecting with his son, recalled Cory promising that he would not use drugs again. He was heartbroken that he didn't get to say goodbye.
The loss of Cory Monteith had a significant impact on the cast and crew of Glee. Series co-creator Ryan Murphy has expressed regret over the decision to continue the show after Monteith's death. Lea Michele, who was dating Monteith at the time of his death, returned to set to film season 5 just a month later. She described the experience as immensely difficult, saying that she "just completely broke".
The recent deaths of Cory Monteith's parents mark another sad chapter for a family that has already endured profound loss.
