An old interview with Priya Sachdev, the wife of the late Sunjay Kapur, has resurfaced, offering a glimpse into her blended family with Sunjay's children from his previous marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor. In the interview, Priya speaks candidly about her relationship with Samaira and Kiaan, and how their family of four children came together over time.
Priya described their family unit, saying, "We have four children—Samaira is the eldest, then my daughter Safira, followed by Kiaan, and our youngest, Azarias". Azarias, her son with Sunjay, became the "glue" that bonded the family, as he is half-sibling to both Samaira and Kiaan, and half-sibling to Safira, Priya's daughter from a previous relationship. "When my son Azarias was born, he was the glue. He brought the family together because he is half them and half Safira," Priya explained. She also noted the close bond between Samaira and Safira, further strengthening the family ties.
Priya emphasized that she never tried to replace Karisma Kapoor as Samaira and Kiaan's mother. "I could never replace their mother," she stated, acknowledging Karisma's important role in their lives. Instead, Priya focused on building her own unique connection with them. "I know I definitely have a space in their lives and their world," she said. "Someone they can bounce off ideas with or talk about education and other things. We talk about fun stuff, frivolous stuff, and serious stuff. So they have made a little space in their hearts for me. I definitely have a bond and connection with them".
Despite the challenges of blending families, Priya praised Samaira and Kiaan's emotional maturity. "Their emotional intelligence is so high," she said. "They've embraced this dynamic with open hearts".
Priya also shared how Karisma gradually became a part of their family gatherings. It began with tea invitations, which then extended to dinners and eventually, family holidays. Priya admitted she initially wondered if Karisma would feel comfortable, but after a few gatherings, it all became natural. She recounted an incident where her son Azarias noticed Karisma's absence from a New Year's card, prompting Priya to create a new one including her. "He saw it and said, 'Okay, this is better, mom.' That was a huge win for me," Priya shared.
To maintain closeness, Priya and Sunjay established a family rule: two holidays a year, no matter what. These trips, one in the summer and one in the winter, were considered sacred, ensuring that the family spent quality time together despite the children's growing independence.
Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12, 2025, following a heart attack during a polo match in England. His funeral was held in New Delhi, with ex-wife Karisma Kapoor and their children, Samaira and Kiaan, in attendance.
