Today marks the 18th anniversary of the release of the Hindi-language sports drama "Apne," and Shilpa Shetty, who played a key role in the film, is feeling nostalgic. The movie, directed by Anil Sharma, premiered on June 29, 2007, and was a significant milestone for the Deol family, as it was the first time that Dharmendra starred alongside his two sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol.
Shilpa Shetty celebrated the film's anniversary by sharing a video on her Instagram Stories, featuring memorable scenes with Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, and Bobby Deol. The video was accompanied by the film's popular song, "Apne To Apne Hote Hain".
"Apne" tells the story of Baldev Chaudhary (Dharmendra), a disgraced former boxing champion who seeks to restore his family's honor through his sons, Angad (Sunny Deol) and Karan (Bobby Deol). Shilpa Shetty played Simran Chaudhary, Angad's wife, while Katrina Kaif played Nandini Sarabhai, Karan's love interest. The film explores themes of family, redemption, and the sacrifices one makes for their loved ones. Kirron Kher also starred as Raavi Chaudhary, Baldev's wife.
Dharmendra has also expressed his pride in "Apne," noting how special it was to work with his sons. He mentioned that director Anil Sharma crafted a script that did justice to all three of their characters, creating a family atmosphere both on and off-screen.
"Apne" was well-received by audiences and became a commercial success. The film's emotional narrative and strong performances resonated with viewers, making it a memorable family drama. The movie brought together Dharmendra and his two sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol for the first time while it also starred Katrina Kaif and Shilpa Shetty in pivotal roles.
Notably, "Apne" wasn't the first time Dharmendra and Sunny Deol shared the screen, having previously appeared in "Sultanat" (1986) and "Kshatriya" (1993). Sunny and Bobby Deol had also worked together in "Dillagi" (1999). However, "Apne" holds a special place as the first film to unite all three Deols.
Looking ahead, the Deol family is planning a sequel, "Apne 2". Dharmendra revealed that they have asked Anil Sharma to write the sequel, which will also star Sunny Deol's son, Karan Deol.
Interestingly, Shilpa Shetty and Sunny Deol have collaborated on other films as well, including "Himmat," "Indian," and "Karz: The Burden of Truth". They are reportedly set to appear together again in the upcoming action film "Lahore 1947," directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan. The film's release, initially planned for Republic Day 2025, has been postponed.
