In a surprising turn of events, the Pune police have revealed that a 22-year-old IT professional who filed a rape complaint against an alleged courier delivery agent, may have done so "out of anger" towards a friend. The woman, a data scientist working in Kalyaninagar, had initially claimed that an unknown man posing as a delivery executive entered her apartment in the Kondhwa area on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. She alleged that the man sprayed a substance on her face, rendering her unconscious, and then sexually assaulted her. She further claimed that the assailant took a selfie on her phone while she was unconscious and left a threatening message warning her against reporting the incident.
However, the police investigation has uncovered several inconsistencies in her account. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that there was no forced entry into the woman's apartment, no chemical substance was used, and the selfie on her phone was taken with her consent before she edited the image. The police also found that the threatening message was typed by the woman herself.
The suspect, initially described as an unknown delivery agent, was later identified as a 27-year-old IT professional working in Baner, who was known to the woman for about a year. Police detained him after his cellphone location placed him near the woman's flat at the time of the alleged incident. According to police sources, the woman admitted that she filed the complaint against her friend because she was angry after he allegedly forced himself on her during a meeting at her home on Wednesday. She stated that she wasn't ready for sexual intercourse that day.
Reportedly, the woman and her friend had met several times at her house after having first met at a community event. On the day of the alleged incident, she had called him to her flat claiming that she was feeling low and disturbed. The police are still investigating the woman's rape allegations. The police are awaiting the results of the woman's medical examination, which will provide further insight into the sexual assault claims. The suspect remains in custody for questioning.
The case has sparked considerable debate, with many calling for a fair investigation and for the protection of women's rights. Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation until all the facts are verified.
