An Indian man residing in Argentina recently traveled 400 kilometers to catch a glimpse of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and express his greetings. The man was able to shake hands with PM Modi.
PM Modi's visit to Argentina marks a historic moment as it is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. Modi had previously visited Argentina in 2018 for the G20 Summit. This visit, made at the invitation of Argentine President Javier Milei, underscores the strengthening relationship between the two nations.
Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, PM Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora. Members of the community greeted him with enthusiastic chants and a traditional Indian classical dance performance. Many members of the Indian community also had the opportunity to interact with the Prime Minister and receive autographs. The Indian diaspora expressed excitement about PM Modi's visit, with many hoping for stronger India-Argentina ties. One member noted that the "josh is very high" and that PM Modi is a world leader who has motivated Indians.
PM Modi's agenda includes paying respects at the statue of General José de San Martín, Argentina's revered freedom fighter. He will also hold delegation-level talks with President Milei, followed by a luncheon hosted in his honor. The discussions between the two leaders are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in key areas such as defense, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, trade and investment, and people-to-people ties. Furthermore, PM Modi is scheduled to visit the iconic Boca Juniors football stadium.
This visit occurs during a significant period as Argentina undergoes major economic reforms, which are similar to those previously undertaken in India. Both countries share robust relations across various sectors, which have deepened over decades. In 2019, the bilateral ties were elevated to a Strategic Partnership, and in 2024, the two countries celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations. The existing collaboration between the two countries includes energy companies. Argentina is considered a key economic partner in Latin America and a close collaborator within the G20. Argentina holds the world's second-largest shale gas reserves and the fourth-largest shale oil reserves. It is also rich in critical minerals like lithium, copper, and rare earth elements, which are essential for India's clean energy and industrial growth plans.
PM Modi's trip to Argentina is part of a five-nation tour aimed at reinforcing India's engagements with the Global South. Argentina is the third stop on his tour, following Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago. After Argentina, PM Modi will visit Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit 2025 and Namibia.
