On Saturday morning, a convoy of buses en route to the Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district experienced a collision, resulting in injuries to at least 36 pilgrims. The incident occurred near the Chanderkote langar site along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway around 8 am.
According to officials, the accident happened when the driver of one of the buses lost control, reportedly due to brake failure, causing a chain reaction involving four other buses in the convoy. The buses were part of a convoy traveling from Jammu's Bhagwati Nagar to the Pahalgam base camp in south Kashmir.
Ramban Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Alyas Khan stated that the bus lost control and collided with other vehicles at the Chanderkot Langer site. Initial reports indicated that 25 pilgrims were injured. However, the number was later updated to 36.
Emergency services, including police and health department rescue teams, swiftly responded to the scene. The injured pilgrims were immediately transported to the District Hospital Ramban for medical treatment. Medical Superintendent Sudarshan Singh Katoch confirmed that the pilgrims were discharged after receiving first aid. Deputy Commissioner Khan visited the hospital to check on the injured and assured them that alternative transportation arrangements were being made to help them continue their journey. Replacement buses were arranged for the pilgrims who were discharged from the hospital.
The Deputy Commissioner also noted that most of the injuries were minor. Senior police officers also went to the hospital to monitor the treatment and instructed the chief medical officer to ensure the best possible care. Following the accident, the damaged buses were replaced, and the convoy was able to resume its journey.
Prior to the collision, the fourth batch of 6,979 pilgrims had departed from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in two separate convoys between 3:30 am and 4:05 am. Of these, 4,226 pilgrims in 161 vehicles were headed to the Nunwan base camp for the traditional 48-kilometer Pahalgam route, while 2,753 pilgrims in 151 vehicles were traveling to the shorter, 14-kilometer Baltal route.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident.
