Google is offering free battery replacements and other compensation options for Pixel 6a users in India and other regions who are experiencing battery issues. This initiative, called the "Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program," addresses complaints of overheating, reduced battery capacity, and decreased charging speed.

Why is Google doing this?

Numerous Pixel 6a users have reported battery problems, including swelling and potential fire risks. Google has acknowledged these issues and is taking action to resolve them.

Who is eligible?

The program targets "impacted devices," including those that have surpassed 400 charge cycles. Google has set up an online portal where Pixel 6a users can check their eligibility by entering their IMEI number and the email ID linked to their device. Keep in mind that devices with liquid or significant physical damage may not qualify for the free battery service. Out-of-warranty issues, such as broken screens, could also incur a service fee.

What are the compensation options?

Eligible Pixel 6a users have several options to choose from:

• Free Battery Replacement: Users can get their battery replaced at no cost at authorized service centers. The battery replacement will be available starting July 21, 2025, at walk-in repair centers in India, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, and Japan. Mail-in repair service will also be available for customers in the US and India.
• Cash Payout: Users can opt for a cash payout of approximately Rs 8,500 (USD 100) via Payoneer. Note that cash payout availability may depend on local laws, and users may need to provide identification proof such as a PAN card in India.
• Google Store Credit: As an alternative to cash, users can receive approximately Rs 12,700 (USD 150) in Google Store credit, which can be used to purchase a new Pixel phone or other products.

Google will provide a cost estimate before starting any repairs, giving users the option to proceed or have their device returned. Compensation amounts will be converted to the local currency based on the exchange rate at the time of selection.

Mandatory Android 16 Update

In addition to the battery replacement program, Google is rolling out a mandatory automatic software update to Android 16 for all Pixel 6a devices starting July 8. This update includes battery management features designed to improve battery life and reduce overheating.

Pixel 6a users can visit Google's dedicated eligibility checker page and enter their IMEI number and email ID to determine if their device qualifies for the program. If eligible, they can then follow the instructions to choose their preferred compensation method and schedule a service appointment or initiate the payout process.
