Google India's Free Pixel 6a Battery Replacement Program: Eligibility and Claiming Instructions for Indian Users

  • 3 min read

Google is offering a free battery replacement for Pixel 6a users in India and other regions due to concerns about battery drain and overheating issues. This initiative is part of Google's new "Battery Performance Programme" designed to address complaints and provide support to affected users. In addition to the free battery replacement, Google is also offering alternative compensation options, including cash or store credit.

Why is Google Offering This?

Reports have surfaced regarding Pixel 6a devices experiencing battery performance degradation, including overheating, reduced battery capacity, and decreased charging speeds. In some instances, there have even been reports of Pixel 6a phones catching fire. Google has acknowledged these issues and is taking proactive steps to ensure user safety and satisfaction.

Android 16 Update

To further mitigate battery-related problems, Google will implement a mandatory Android 16 update to all Pixel 6a devices. This update aims to improve battery efficiency and reduce the risk of overheating. However, specific battery management features within the update will only activate on "Impacted Devices" after they reach 400 charge cycles. Users will receive a notification when their device reaches 375 cycles, indicating the upcoming changes. These features will reduce battery capacity and charging performance to prevent potential overheating.

Eligibility and How to Claim

Pixel 6a users can check their eligibility for the free battery replacement and other compensation options on a dedicated Google page. To determine eligibility, users will need to provide their email address linked to the device and the phone's IMEI number. Google has clarified that devices with liquid damage or significant physical damage may not qualify for the free battery service. Out-of-warranty issues, such as broken screens, may also incur a service fee.

Available Options for Eligible Users

Eligible Pixel 6a users have several options to choose from:

  • Free Battery Replacement: Users can get their battery replaced at no charge at authorized service centers. Starting July 21, 2025, battery replacements will be available at walk-in repair centers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, Japan, and India. Mail-in repair services are also available for customers in the US and India.
  • Cash Payout: Users can opt for a cash payout of $100 (approximately Rs 8,500) via Payoneer.
  • Google Store Credit: Users can choose to receive $150 (approximately Rs 12,700) in Google Store credit, which can be used to purchase a new Pixel phone or other products from the Google Store.

The final value in local currency for the cash payout and store credit will be based on the exchange rate at the time of selection. Google has also noted that cash payouts may not be available in all regions due to local regulations. In India, users may be required to provide ID proof, such as a PAN card, to process cash payments.

Important Considerations

  • Before any repairs are initiated, Google will provide a cost estimate for any applicable service fees.
  • Battery replacements are subject to availability and may depend on the user's location.
  • Google may ask for more information for verification purposes when someone is helping a family member or friend with the process.
  • The engineer will inspect the device for physical damages that may have caused battery performance issues. These physical damages could include liquid damage, scratches, gouges, or punctures, which may make the device ineligible for battery replacement.

This program provides flexibility and support for Pixel 6a users, particularly those who have been experiencing battery issues or are considering upgrading their devices. By offering a combination of a mandatory software update and hardware support, Google aims to address the battery concerns effectively and provide practical solutions for affected customers.
