Luka Modric's illustrious career at Real Madrid is set to conclude after 13 trophy-laden years, with the Croatian maestro poised to join AC Milan. The transfer is expected to be completed following Real Madrid's participation in the FIFA Club World Cup, with Modric scheduled to link up with his new Milan teammates in August.
The news was confirmed by Massimiliano Allegri, who is returning for a second spell as AC Milan's manager. At his introductory press conference, Allegri stated, "With Modric, let's wait for him to arrive. There is the Club World Cup, then he will arrive in August. He is an important and extraordinary player who needs no introduction". Allegri also mentioned other midfielders who will be joining the squad, including Samuele Ricci, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Warren Bondo, and Youssouf Fofana, expressing confidence in the team's midfield options.
Modric's departure from Real Madrid marks the end of an era. Since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, the Croatian midfielder has become the most decorated player in the club's history. His trophy haul includes six Champions League titles, among a total of 28 major honors. He could potentially add a 29th title if Real Madrid triumphs over Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semi-final and subsequently wins the final against either Chelsea or Fluminense.
Despite turning 40 in September, Modric remains determined to play at the highest level. He aims to stay in Europe to maintain his form for Croatia in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup. While there were reported offers from MLS and the Saudi Pro League, Modric's preference was to continue playing in the UEFA Champions League.
AC Milan's acquisition of Modric signals their ambition to revitalize the squad after a disappointing season. The team finished eighth in Serie A and missed out on European competition. Allegri acknowledged the need to regain the fans' respect through hard work and results, emphasizing the importance of their support.
The arrival of Modric could offset the potential departures of key players. While Tijjani Reijnders was sold to Manchester City in June, and Theo Hernandez is rumored to be heading to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, goalkeeper Mike Maignan and forward Rafael Leao are expected to stay.
Milan's transfer strategy may involve offloading some current forwards to make way for new additions. Luka Jovic, Noah Okafor, and Samuel Chukwueze are among the players who could be sacrificed if suitable offers are received. The club is also reportedly interested in wingers Andreas Skov Olsen, Noa Lang, and Ismalia Sarr. Other potential targets for Milan include Sandro Tonali, Samuele Ricci, Lorenzo Lucca, Pietro Comuzzo, Giovanni Fabbian and Diego Coppola.
Modric's move to AC Milan has been in the works for some time. Milan's sporting director, Igli Tare, reportedly met with Modric in Croatia and reached an agreement on personal terms. The deal is rumored to be a one-year contract with an option for a further season, with Modric potentially earning around €3 million per season. Although Modric's agents also contacted Inter Miami, no deal came to pass. Modric had previously expressed a desire to play in Europe.
