Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu has drawn comparisons between young Vaibhav Suryavanshi and West Indies legend Brian Lara, highlighting the youngster's extraordinary bat speed and potential. Rayudu believes that Suryavanshi, with the right guidance, could emulate Lara's success.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi, at just 14 years old, has already made a significant impact on the cricketing world. He became the youngest player in IPL history when he debuted for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). In his debut match, he announced himself by hitting a six off the first ball he faced. During the IPL 2025 season, Suryavanshi scored a blistering century off just 35 balls against the Gujarat Titans, becoming the youngest centurion in T20 and IPL history. This was also the fastest century by an Indian in the IPL. In the same season, he amassed 252 runs at a strike rate exceeding 200.
Rayudu, speaking on a podcast, emphasized the importance of preserving Suryavanshi's natural talent and unique batting style. "His bat speed is extraordinary. Jo uska whip aata hai⦠I hope nobody changes that," Rayudu stated. He suggested that Suryavanshi could benefit from interacting with Brian Lara to learn how to control his bat speed, particularly when defending or playing with soft hands.
Suryavanshi's journey has been rapid. Before his IPL debut, he made his first-class debut for Bihar in the Ranji Trophy at the age of 12 years and 284 days. He also showcased his talent in the U-19 squad, scoring a 58-ball century against Australia. In July 2025, he became the youngest player to score a century in Youth ODIs, smashing 143 against England.
Rayudu also cautioned against overloading the youngster with too much advice. He advised Suryavanshi to trust his instincts and focus on his game. He also suggested coaches should avoid over-instructing him. Rayudu believes Suryavanshi is fortunate to have Rahul Dravid as a coach at Rajasthan Royals, as Dravid has experience nurturing young cricketers.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi's explosive batting style, coupled with his fearless approach, has drawn comparisons to Sachin Tendulkar as well. His ability to dominate international bowlers at such a young age has led many to believe that he has the potential to become a future star for India.
Rayudu believes that Suryavanshi has a high chance of playing for India soon. With continued guidance and by staying true to his natural game, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has the potential to not only become a star in Indian cricket but also to emulate the greatness of Brian Lara.
