Joao Pedro, Chelsea's recent signing, is in contention to start in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final against Fluminense after cutting short his Rio de Janeiro beach holiday to join the team. The 23-year-old Brazilian forward finalized his move from Brighton & Hove Albion last week for a reported £60 million. He promptly joined the Blues in the United States, making his debut as a substitute in their 2-1 quarter-final victory over Palmeiras.

With Liam Delap suspended for the semi-final, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca may hand Joao Pedro his first start. Delap and Levi Colwill are both suspended after picking up their second yellow cards of the tournament in the quarter-final win over Palmeiras. Nicolas Jackson, who was an unused substitute in the previous game after serving a two-match ban, is also an option to lead the line. Maresca acknowledged the situation, stating, "Now with Levi and Liam out, we're going to find a different solution. Joao is ready. We also have Nico. For sure, we're going to find a solution". Christopher Nkunku could also feature in the lineup.

Despite being on vacation when Chelsea called, Joao Pedro said he was prepared for the opportunity. "I was on holiday, but I was always training," Joao Pedro said. "I was in Brazil – yes, beach, Brazilian food, spending time with friends. But I was always training – I have a personal trainer – so I was ready". He emphasized that he maintained his fitness, anticipating a potential move. "I knew Chelsea had an interest in me so that's why I was training harder and when they called me to come here I was ready, not 100 percent, but ready enough to come here and train," he stated.

Joao Pedro's debut has already made a positive impression. In his 35-minute appearance against Palmeiras, he created two chances, which was the most of any player on the team. Only Cole Palmer had more shots on target than Pedro. Enzo Fernandez noted Joao Pedro's potential, adding that the team's new players are eager to contribute.

Joao Pedro's arrival bolsters Chelsea's attacking options. He will compete with the likes of Delap and Jackson for a starting role. The Brazilian forward welcomes the competition, believing that different playing styles will benefit the team. "Every player has a different style to play," he said. "Delap has a style, Jackson another and I have my way. But I think it's good for Chelsea. I think whoever brings more good things to the team is going to play. Everyone will have to work hard and then Enzo will decide".

Chelsea's semi-final clash against Fluminense is scheduled for Tuesday, July 8th, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The winner will advance to the Club World Cup final. Chelsea is aiming to win the competition for the second time, having previously lifted the trophy in 2021. They beat Palmeiras 2-1 in the final in Abu Dhabi.

The Club World Cup has already proven to be financially beneficial for Chelsea. Their progress in the tournament has earned them over £61 million in prize money. A victory in the semi-final would further boost their earnings.

With a blend of youth and experience, Chelsea is looking to make a strong statement at the Club World Cup. Joao Pedro's readiness to step into the starting lineup exemplifies the team's ambition and adaptability.
