The Indian cricket team, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, achieved a historic victory in the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. This win marked India's first-ever Test victory at this venue in nine attempts. The victory was made even more significant by the absence of their premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah.
Gill, who became the fourth-youngest Indian captain to win a Test, emphasized the team's belief in their ability to take 20 wickets, even without Bumrah. He stated that India has a strong roster of players with enough quality to win, proving that they can take 20 wickets in any situation.
"Jasprit bhai is one of the best bowlers in the world, but irrespective of that fact [his absence], we can take 20 wickets anywhere. And this was just another example," Gill said.
Akash Deep stepped up in Bumrah's absence, taking 10 wickets in the match and playing a crucial role in India's victory. Mohammed Siraj also contributed significantly with his bowling performance. Gill praised the efforts of both bowlers, acknowledging their discipline and importance in leveling the series.
"When two of your fast bowlers take 16-17 wickets, the captaincy is extremely simple. When two fast bowlers are in such terrific form…" said Gill, further emphasizing the impact of Akash Deep and Siraj.
Gill also confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah will be back in the playing XI for the third Test against England at Lord's. Bumrah's return is expected to boost India's pace attack. Gill expressed his excitement about playing at Lord's, calling it possibly the most recognizable cricket stadium in the world. He believes it is a great honor to captain the team there.
The victory at Edgbaston was comprehensive, with India winning by 336 runs. This is India's biggest-ever victory by runs in an away Test match. Gill played a key role with the bat, scoring 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second. He was named Player of the Match for his performance.
Gill emphasized the importance of leading by example as captain. He stated that he always wants to put the team first rather than his personal desires.
With the series now level at 1-1, Gill believes that India has the momentum to win the series. He stated that this is the best Indian team to come to England and they have the capability to beat England and win the series. He stressed the importance of making the right decisions and continuing to fight.
"I believe this is the best Indian team to ever come here to England and we have the capability to beat them and win the series from here. We have got the right momentum with us and if we keep making the right decisions and if we keep trying and keep fighting it will be a series to remember," Gill concluded.
Shubman Gill's captaincy and batting performance in the Birmingham Test have been widely praised, marking a significant moment in his career and Indian cricket.
