In a significant development in the Gopal Khemka murder case, one of the prime accused, Vikas alias Raja, was killed in a police encounter in Patna. The encounter took place in the Malsalami area, where Raja reportedly opened fire on the police during a raid. Raja was allegedly the person who provided the weapon to the shooter.
Gopal Khemka, a prominent businessman in Bihar, was shot dead on the night of July 4, 2025, outside his residence in the Gandhi Maidan area of Patna. The incident occurred around 11:40 pm as he was stepping out of his car. Preliminary investigations suggested that the murder was premeditated and involved multiple individuals. CCTV footage showed a man in a blue shirt waiting outside Khemka's residence before a bike-borne assailant opened fire.
Following the murder, the Patna Police detained more than a dozen suspects, including one who was apprehended while attending Khemka's funeral. The shooter was identified as Umesh, who was allegedly hired by a "political figure".
The police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder. The SIT began examining CCTV footage, collecting witness statements, and reviewing the victim's recent activities.
The murder of Gopal Khemka drew widespread condemnation and political outcry. BJP leaders alleged that the shooter was hired by a political figure. Political strategist Prashant Kishor criticized the Nitish Kumar government, stating that the law and order situation in Bihar was no better than during the "jungle raj" under Lalu Prasad Yadav.
Khemka's family requested police protection, citing a previous family tragedy. Khemka's son, Gunjan Khemka, was also shot dead in 2018 in a similar attack in the Hajipur industrial area of Vaishali district.
The encounter killing of Vikas alias Raja is a major breakthrough in the Gopal Khemka murder case. However, investigations are still ongoing to determine the motive behind the murder and to identify all those involved.
