Following India's series-leveling victory at Edgbaston, captain Shubman Gill explained the decision to exclude Kuldeep Yadav from the playing XI, despite the spinner's strong form. Gill highlighted the importance of bolstering the team's batting depth, especially after lower-order collapses in the previous Test at Leeds. This led to the inclusion of Washington Sundar, whose all-round abilities proved crucial in the Edgbaston triumph.
Gill acknowledged the temptation of including a bowler like Kuldeep Yadav but emphasized the significance of Sundar's batting. Sundar's inclusion provided crucial batting depth. Gill pointed out that the partnership between himself and Sundar was vital in extending India's lead. Without their contribution, the lead would have been significantly smaller, creating a different psychological dynamic. "If there was no partnership, then I think our lead would have been 70-80-90 runs, which is psychologically very different from 180 run lead," Gill stated.
Gill also explained the rationale behind utilizing spinners like Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, particularly when the Dukes ball softened. He noted that on a fifth-day pitch, spin could offer more control than pace, especially with the limited movement available. "Spin gives more control than pace on flat wickets," Gill explained, defending the inclusion of Sundar and Jadeja.
Furthermore, Gill addressed a tactical risk taken during England's first innings. When England were at 83/5, the team opted for short balls in an attempt to quickly secure additional wickets. Although this strategy resulted in some leaked runs, Gill felt that India's advantageous position in the game allowed them to take that risk. Gill also dismissed the significance of India's previous winless record at Edgbaston. He asserted that the current Indian team possesses the necessary capabilities to win the series in England.
Shubman Gill has been in great form, having already amassed 585 runs in four Test innings. He revealed that he began focusing on his batting technique towards the end of the IPL 2025. Gill emphasized that his primary focus is on maximizing his time at the crease and not on external perceptions. He stated that the team does not focus on what people are saying about them. Looking ahead, Gill is optimistic about India's chances in the upcoming Test at Lord's. He believes the team has the momentum and, with continued determination, can make the series a memorable one.
