Following his unexpected resignation on July 21, 2025, Jagdeep Dhankhar, the former Vice President of India, has retreated from the public eye, prompting considerable speculation regarding his current activities. Dhankhar, who served as Vice President from August 11, 2022, resigned citing health reasons, creating a vacancy in the second-highest constitutional office.
Since his departure, Dhankhar has not made any public appearances or statements. According to sources, he remains within the Vice President's Enclave. The Rajya Sabha secretariat appointed Kaustubh Sudhakar Bhalekar, Dhankhar's former senior personal secretary, as his private secretary on August 6, 2025.
Dhankhar's tenure as Vice President was marked by politically charged remarks, often perceived as favoring the ruling BJP. This was a continuation of his controversial governorship of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022, where he frequently criticized the Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee.
Prior to becoming Vice President, Dhankhar had a long and varied political career. He was a Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the Chandra Shekhar ministry from 1990 to 1991 and a member of Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991. Between 1993 and 1998, he served as a Member of Rajasthan's Legislative Assembly. Throughout his career, he has been affiliated with multiple political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress (INC), and the Janata Dal (JD).
His resignation has triggered the Election Commission to initiate the poll process to elect the next Vice President. The new Vice President will serve a full five-year term. Speculation regarding Dhankhar's successor includes names like Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, and Lieutenant Governors Manoj Sinha and VK Saxena. In the interim, Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson Harivansh Narayan Singh is fulfilling the duties of the chairperson.
