Jason Isaacs, the original Lucius Malfoy in the "Harry Potter" films, has expressed his support and excitement for Johnny Flynn, who will be taking over the role in the upcoming HBO "Harry Potter" television series. In a recent interview, Isaacs shared his thoughts on the casting and whether he offered Flynn any advice.
Isaacs, who portrayed the cunning Malfoy patriarch in seven of the original "Harry Potter" films, believes that Flynn will bring his own unique flair to the character. He told Entertainment Weekly, "Johnny will do his own thing. Maybe he'll be more charming. I doubt that he'll look like me, because that was the look I came up with, and he's far too original to want to copy anything". Isaacs emphasized that the new series is being redesigned "from scratch," including Hogwarts, the costumes, and the scripts, to create a fresh version of "Harry Potter" for a new generation.
When asked if Flynn had sought his advice, Isaacs responded with a grin, "If he had, I wouldn't tell anyone". However, he admitted that he did text Flynn, as the two actors have a friendly relationship after working together on the 2021 war drama, "Operation Mincemeat". Isaacs praised Flynn as "absolutely delightful and phenomenally talented," expressing his confidence that Flynn will create something entirely different with the character, just as he did.
Isaacs also reminisced about creating Lucius Malfoy's iconic look for "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" (2002). He revealed that initial designs featured Malfoy in a pinstriped suit with short hair, which he rejected. Instead, he proposed the long, icy-blond hair, sweeping cloak, and cane-wand that ultimately defined the character, persuading director Chris Columbus to embrace his vision.
The upcoming "Harry Potter" series is set to premiere in 2027 and promises to be a reimagining of the beloved books. Isaacs is excited about the series and knows that it will be very different from the movies. He stated that "They're redesigning Hogwarts and the costumes and they're writing all these fabulous new scripts that are expanding each book into a whole season. And it'll be fab — it'll be for a new generation. It'll be their version of Harry Potter".
Before the casting news was confirmed, Isaacs jokingly said he was trying to "milk" his final moments as the only actor who has played Lucius Malfoy. In April, Isaacs shared he's relishing in his final moments as the only on-screen Lucius Malfoy, adding, "I have to say I'll milk this 'cause this time next year, there's gonna be another Lucius Malfoy, and he's gonna be fantastic, and I'll be long forgotten. So, I am savoring every other applause I get,” Isaacs said, "I've had a good run".
