Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have agreed to strengthen ties between their nations, particularly in the areas of defense and counterterrorism. This commitment came as PM Modi received Brazil's highest civilian honor, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross.
The Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross was presented to PM Modi by President Lula in Brasilia. This award recognizes PM Modi's contributions to strengthening bilateral relations between India and Brazil. It also acknowledges his work in enhancing cooperation across key global platforms. Since assuming office in May 2014, PM Modi has received 26 international honors from foreign governments.
Following the conferment of the award, PM Modi expressed his gratitude to President Lula, the Brazilian government, and the people of Brazil. He noted that it was a proud and emotional moment not just for him but for 1.4 billion Indians.
PM Modi was welcomed with full state honors at the Alvorada Palace in Brasília. President Lula greeted PM Modi at the palace entrance, followed by a ceremonial guard of honor and the playing of the national anthems of both India and Brazil. A special 114-horse ceremonial parade marked the occasion.
During the visit, India and Brazil are expected to sign agreements focusing on renewable energy, counterterrorism, agricultural research, and information exchange. These agreements build upon the existing strong trade relationship and growing defense industry partnership between the two countries.
The leaders will focus on global conflicts, reforms to multilateral institutions, economic cooperation, artificial intelligence, and climate action. India is expected to raise the issue of cross-border terrorism and seek support from the BRICS grouping.
In a statement, PM Modi said that both sides have decided to further strengthen mutual cooperation in counter-terrorism.
