The film Udaipur Files, which centers around the controversial 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal, is heading towards its scheduled release on July 11, 2025, amidst legal challenges and significant alterations. The Supreme Court has declined to grant an urgent hearing to halt the film's screening, effectively allowing its release. However, the film has faced scrutiny from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has mandated 150 cuts. Additionally, a petition was filed in the Delhi High Court seeking to stay the release, citing concerns that the movie could incite communal tensions and disrupt public order.
Several parties have voiced concerns regarding the film's potential impact on communal harmony. Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind moved the Delhi High Court to stop the release, arguing that the film's trailer portrays the Muslim community in a prejudicial manner, potentially disrupting public peace and order. The organization contends that the film could create a serious divide between Hindus and Muslims by suggesting the complicity of Muslim leaders in Kanhaiya Lal's murder. The petition also highlights the film's reference to the Gyanvapi Masjid issue, which is currently sub judice, and its amplification of controversial statements made by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, which previously led to communal unrest. Similarly, Samajwadi Party has objected to the film, with Abu Azmi demanding an immediate ban, claiming it could spread hatred and increase controversy.
Despite these concerns, Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, representing the CBFC and the Centre, informed the Delhi High Court that the offensive portions of the movie have been removed. The Delhi High Court has directed the producers to arrange a screening for the counsels involved in the case.
One of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, Mohammad Jawed, sought an urgent hearing in the Supreme Court to stay the film's release, arguing that it could compromise his right to a fair trial by presenting a one-sided view of events and influencing public opinion. However, the Supreme Court refused to grant urgent relief, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Joymalya Bagchi stated, "Let the film be released". The court suggested that the petitioner mention the matter before the concerned court after the summer vacation.
Director Bharat Shrinate has stated that the film is not about any particular religion but about ideology and truth. He also questioned how people could judge the film's content without watching it.
Netizens have expressed support for the film's release, with hashtags like #SupportUdaipurFiles trending. Many believe that the film should be released to tell the truth about the Kanhaiya Lal murder case.
The film was previously titled Gyanvapi Files: A Tailor's Murder Story and was originally scheduled for release on June 27.
