Producer Suneel Darshan recently recounted an incident highlighting his professional relationship with Akshay Kumar, recalling a time when Kumar, early in his career, promised to do 100 films with him. Darshan, known for films like Andaaz, Ek Rishtaa, and Jaanwar with Kumar, shared this anecdote, revealing the actor's emotional commitment during a challenging phase in his career.
Darshan first met Kumar when the actor was facing a series of professional setbacks. The producer cast Kumar in Jaanwar at a time when other big projects weren't materializing for him. Jaanwar became a turning point, revitalizing Kumar's career.
After the success of Jaanwar, rumors circulated that Darshan was considering a new film with another actor. According to Darshan, Kumar heard this rumor and visited his office, insisting they talk privately. Kumar drove Darshan to the end of the street and confronted him, saying he'd heard Darshan was making a film with someone else. Darshan clarified that he had met the son of a prominent figure who wanted him to see some rushes, but Kumar wasn't satisfied.
In a display of commitment, Kumar took Darshan's hand and promised to make 100 films with him. Darshan was moved by this gesture, recognizing Kumar's sincerity. He reflected on this moment, acknowledging that he was possibly Kumar's "best bet" at the time. This promise underscored the trust and respect in their professional relationship.
Darshan also recounted an earlier incident where Kumar was mistreated by another producer. According to Darshan, Kumar visited him in tears, sharing that the producer of another film had refused to put up banners featuring him, saying he wasn't worthy. Darshan, in response, chose to support Kumar by showcasing him on the largest billboard in Juhu, even omitting the film's leading ladies, who were more established at the time. Despite a slow start in Mumbai, the film went on to be successful.
Andaaz, released in 2003, further solidified Kumar's position in the industry. Darshan produced the film, directed by Raj Kanwar, which also marked the Bollywood debut for both Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra. Darshan's decision to cast fresh faces opposite Kumar was a key element that contributed to the film's success. The film's music, composed by Nadeem-Shravan, was also a major hit. According to Darshan, Andaaz was created quickly due to a scheduling conflict, with the music and casting decisions being made in approximately 40 days.
Despite their successful collaborations, the promise of 100 films was not fulfilled. However, the films they did together had a significant impact. Darshan noted that Andaaz augmented Kumar's stardom, making him highly sought after by filmmakers who had previously overlooked him. The film also changed how audiences perceived leading actresses in Hindi cinema.
