The Union Cabinet has lauded the safe return of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla from his 18-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The Cabinet passed a resolution that hailed the mission as a milestone in India's space journey and a source of inspiration for the nation's youth.
Group Captain Shukla, a pilot in the Indian Air Force, returned to Earth on July 15, 2025, becoming the first Indian astronaut to visit the ISS. His journey was part of the Axiom-4 mission, which launched on June 25. During his time on the ISS, Shukla conducted numerous scientific experiments in microgravity, collaborating with fellow crew members of Expedition 73. He was also instrumental in the Sprouts Project, which studied plant growth in microgravity. This project has potential applications for long-duration space travel and sustainable agriculture on Earth.
The Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that Group Captain Shukla's mission serves as an inspiration for the younger generation, fostering curiosity and scientific thinking, and encouraging them to pursue careers in science and innovation. The Cabinet firmly believes that this mission will inject new energy into the resolve of a developed India, bolstering the dream of making India a developed nation by 2047.
The Cabinet described the return of Group Captain Shukla as a moment of pride, glory, and joy for the nation. It commended the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the broader scientific community for their sustained efforts and technical excellence that made this achievement possible. The Cabinet also acknowledged that the mission significantly elevates India's global standing in space exploration.
During his mission, Shukla conducted advanced experiments in space biology and human physiology, researching muscle regeneration, microbial growth, cognitive performance, crop viability, and the behavior of cyanobacteria. The findings from these experiments are expected to contribute significantly to India's future human spaceflight goals, including the Gaganyaan mission and the proposed Bharatiya Antariksha Station.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Group Captain Shukla on his successful mission. President Murmu noted that his role in piloting the Axiom Mission 4 to the ISS has created a new milestone for India's space exploration and international collaboration in science and technology. Prime Minister Modi stated that Shukla has inspired a billion dreams through his dedication, courage, and pioneering spirit.
Group Captain Shukla underwent initial medical checks immediately after splashdown, and will undergo a battery of tests including cardiovascular assessments, balance and coordination evaluations, immune function checks, and psychological evaluations. NASA and the Indian Air Force will continue to monitor his physical and mental health closely in the coming weeks. According to Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Shukla is expected to return to India by August 17, following post-mission procedures such as rehabilitation and debriefing sessions with Team ISRO.
