Following the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filing a chargesheet against Robert Vadra in a money laundering case concerning a land deal in Gurgaon's Shikohpur, Rahul Gandhi has strongly defended his brother-in-law, alleging a decade-long "witch hunt" by the government. The chargesheet was filed a day after the ED attached 43 immovable properties linked to Vadra and his entities.
Gandhi voiced his support on X, stating, "My brother-in-law has been hounded by this government for the last ten years. This latest chargesheet is a continuation of that witch hunt. I stand with Robert, Priyanka and their children as they face yet another onslaught of malicious, politically motivated slander and harassment". He added, "I know that they are all brave enough to withstand any kind of persecution and they will continue to do so with dignity. The truth will eventually prevail".
The ED's chargesheet names Vadra as an accused, along with other individuals and entities including Satyanand Yajee, Kewal Singh Virk, and Onkareshwar Properties Pvt Ltd. The ED's investigation stems from a 2018 FIR filed by Gurgaon police, which alleged fraudulent transactions in the land deal. The agency has also attached 43 properties worth over Rs 37 crore linked to Vadra and his entities, including Sky Light Hospitality Pvt Ltd.
Vadra's office released a statement maintaining that the proceedings are "nothing more than an extension of the political witch hunt by the present government". The statement asserted Vadra's cooperation with authorities and expressed confidence that he would be cleared of any wrongdoing through legal proceedings. "As a law-abiding citizen, Vadra has always and will continue to extend his fullest cooperation to the authorities and he is confident that at the end of it all, he will be cleared of any wrongdoing," the statement said.
The Congress party has also rallied in support of Vadra, condemning the ED's actions as a "vicious attempt by the ruling government to intimidate and persecute political opponents". The party claims that investigative agencies are being misused to harass opposition leaders. Senior Congress leader K C Venugopal echoed this sentiment, stating, "It seems the Modi-Shah duo has given the ED a monthly assignment to go after the Congress senior leadership and their family...The latest ED action against Mr. Robert Vadra is pure political vendetta — yet another futile attempt at intimidation".
BJP's Tom Vadakkan dismissed Rahul Gandhi's claims, calling it a case of "the blind leading the blind". He advised using the judicial process, noting that both individuals are on bail.
The Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi is yet to take cognisance of the ED chargesheet against Robert Vadra.
